Octravia 1.6tdi first thousand miles - economical !

Featured Replies

Just thought I'd add some first impressions. When I was looking in March I could only test drive a 1.9tdi - noisy with loads of oomph ! The dealer promised the 1.6tdi was smoother and quieter but with the same power. I only had a drive in a 1.6tdi once the order had been placed - and it felt totally different - quieter, but not much power at low revs, and no power-kick at higher revs. So I had to wait a few weeks for delivery hoping I hadn't made a mistake. I would never normally consider buying a new car - but decided to use the scrappage deal on my 11-year old Mondeo which was starting to run into expensive repairs - on the basis that the Octavia would be much cheaper to run. £30 road tax, low insurance and hopefully great economy. I couldn't believe I would be able to achieve the official figures (49 urban, 62 combined, 72 extra-urban) , and wasn't sure I could believe the trip-computer readings. Had to wait to brim the tank again to see if the investment had been worth it. I have had to do a few long journeys recently, so just for fun have been driving as gently as possible - inside lane stuff ! Have now filled the car twice - first tank 600 miles at 67mpg (68 showing on the trip), and second tank, today, 770 miles at 71mpg (73 showing on trip). Hugely pleased - car is smooth, quiet, comfortable, with a huge boot, and good equipment on the SE version. It doesn't have the poise or handling of my old Mondeo - but has ample power once you are used to it - and if it can average around 60mpg overall, which looks possible, must be one of the cheapest family cars to run.

Fantastic economy that Stephen

what sort of speed have you been driving at to get that mpg ?

and what mpg do you get on a average day to day running ?

Hi there!

I'm getting about the same myself. 68mpg on a run at 60/70mph.

Just wondering when the good men and women in the tuning community will be able to crack and map this engine!

That is some excellent economy

I've been getting 45mpg up till now, but started driving more economically and I'm up to 50mpg on my last tank, but I'm hoping it'll get better still with more time.

Thanks Guys,

Even more happy I have ordered mine now

Regards

Mac

To be fair - that high economy was pootling along dual carriageways and motorways at around 60mph - but it did include 300 miles with three adults and a heavy bootful too. I haven't done an average combined urban and long-distance run yet. I find the trip computer running mpg (something I have never had before) really helpful - just raising your right foot half an inch makes a huge difference to economy and not much to cruising speed.
