Fabia 1.9 SDI: Sump Plug horror.

Featured Replies

Hi,

Just a request really. On my first service of my furby I found the sump plug had been shot on with an air gun. On removal... it brought the sump threads with it.

Obviously I wet myself.

I've booked it into a recommended garage to have the hole tapped and another bolt put in... but...

if it all goes "pete tong", can anyone recommend a supplier of a replacement sump?

Thanks in advance....

Phil.

I really wouldn't have thought anyone would use a welly gun to tighten a sump plug! Are you sure someone hasn't used something like Loctite rather than replacing the drain plug with a new one (the plug uses a crush washer which cannot be reused).

If this garage manages to retap your sump, assuming the sump has enough material left to get a good thread into it, will you need to use a non standard sump plug? If this is the case I would thing about replacing your sump with a new one.

Happens quite alot, this is why VAG recommend you replace the sump plug every service.

New sump is around

Do people overtighten the sump plug so much that it is difficult to remove? Al for the sake of a replacment plug! Costing less that

Its not so mucht he over tightening (which doesnt help) but because of the Ali sump I think.

I agree, but the car needs to be back on the road ASAP. Can't have it sitting around a week whilst I source a sump (not going to the dealer...) and get a garage to fit it. Not confident I can do it myself. I'm only a basic DIY mechanic as it is...

Thanks.

It was TIGHT.. I'm not talking about hand tight with a pull on a wrench.... I had to put my FULL body weight on the wrench to get the thing to losen. If they loctited it in... there was no trace of it. I just think it was over tightened myself.

Thanks...

You could also try www.eurocarparts.com or www.skospares.com - I've used and would highly recommend both :)

Chris

Thanks. I'll look them up.

The garage tapped the hole up a size and found hair-line cracks in the threads, so they tapped it up another size. Everything is ok at the moment, so at least it will buy me some time to source another sump.

Out of interest... has anyone got any experience of swapping a sump on these cars? Does it need the gearbox/clutch removing before you can get the sump off? Also, will a sump from a scrappy/brakers need to be skimmed before fitting?

Thanks...

Phil.

Sumps are usually held on with about a dozen smal bolts that go into the bottom of the block. Wouldn't of thought it would be very hard.

BTW you thought about getting the sump hellicoiled ? Might work out cheaper than a complete sump. Basically they put a thread within the thread.

Now I've had it tapped and a bigger plug fitted, I'd rather not tempt fate by mucking around with this sump much more. I've also noticed that large helicoils are quite expensive for the inserts alone. It all depends on how much a replacement sump is, new, and how much a sump from a breakers yard will be after it has been skimmed.

Phil.

You cant go to large with a hellicoil on these sumps either as the bung is quite close to the bottom of the sump.

Sump is easy enough to do, nothing to tricky to remove first. uses a white sealer not a gasket, dont go over the top with it though, excess can block the pic up.
