Can anyone remember what 205/50/17's were like

Featured Replies

I need four tyres soon and can't decide which size to go for

I can't honestly remember what the 205's felt like against 225's

Other than I think they get better mpg (less resistance) is there anything else I should consider.

Oh yeah they are £5 cheaper per corner lol

The 205's should be better in bad weather.

Care to enlighten me as to why, out of interest like

The 205's are cheaper? It's usually the other way round isn't it?

I've still got 205s but couldn't really compare them to 225s as the cars with 225s I've driven have had all sorts of suspension mods as well :|

I have 205's on the Octavia and had 225's on a MK4 Golf GTI. To be honest I cant tell any difference except the Golf was a bit harsher ride due to them being 18's.

Thats what I thought lol

Falken 452's 205/50/17 = £72 and some change, thats fitted as well !!!!

They are £68 (plus post)each on camskill and I would pay roughly £7.50 per corner for fitting so its a no-brainer.

Round and very dark grey! ;)

Seriously, aquaplaning resistance is an inverse function of tyre width, so a narrower tyre cuts through standing water (and snow or loose gravel on a hard base) better than a wider one.

"Inverse function" !! I like that.... What he said.

Haha you can always count on Ken for a mind **** lol

Inverse function - when increasing one parameter causes the other to decrease. In this case, increasing tyre width increases the tendancy of the tyre to build up a "bow wave" in standing water, which in turn reduces the ability of the tyre to stay in contact with the road (for a given type of tyre and tread depth; changing tyre make or range can have effects here too).

The car will probably feel a little more nimble on 205's, and be quicker.

I'd only ever buy 205's for mine.

Looks like it's back to the old skool then.

Should cut out the little bit of tramlining it seems prone to as well

Thanks guys, my mind is made up, but feel free to add more comments if you like :)

Normally run 205 Conti's, like them alot but too expensive, so tried Goodyear F1, 225's dont like them car is noisier and in my opinion handles worse so just got some Falken 452's getting them fitted at weekend, see how i go on with these usually have favourable reviews. Wanted Conti's but i'm not paying about £120 a corner, so thought give the Falken's a try. £66 a corner from Camskill.

I can't fault the falkens, the toyos grip slightly better in the dry but the falkens are better in the wet, and they last alot longer than the toyos, I'm up to about 12.5k on these and theres still a few miles left in them, the toyos would be gone at 10k,

Had some falkens fitted just before xmas to all 4 corners, i love them. Perform really well in all kinds of weather and to be honest i didnt find them too bad in the snow. Got mine form camskill, spot on service and half the price you'd pay for contis.

Cant comment on 205 vs 225 as kept the 205 width when i changed mine over.

i got 4 kumho ku31's for £290 fitted, they were 225/45s and they are great.loads more grip when pulling away, even in the wet,way better in the corners.as for being worse at aquaplaning? load of tosh,i hit some standing water (in the dark) near kendall coming back from scotland a few months ago and they just ploughed through it,i cant say how fast i was going for obvious reasons, but i love them!

Only one slight problem with the kumhos.................I killed a front pair in 5K when I tried them lol, and it was over winter so they didn't get as much abuse !!!

May have been a duff batch :giggle:

Try having a look at www.event-tyres.co.uk I used these guys when I replaced my front tyres got fk452's cost a few pennies short of £70 per tyre fitted, balance and old tyres disposed of for that price. Another nice thing about them is that they come to you, work or home. The service was excellent and I will be using them again, the difference in cost between them and camskill was less than the fitting would of cost.

+1 for event tyres, they fitted my Kumhos in a snowstorm on my driveway one winter

Daft question, what psi do you guys set the tire pressures to on 205/50/17???

Not that old chestnut again lol

It's on the sticker in your filler flap, if you don't like how it feels on those pressures, try experimenting to suit you.

 can't afford 40p each time, should be a law where all petrol stations must provide free air with a calibrated gauge lol

Erm, buy a gauge and a tyre pump/inflator instead of going to the garage each time?
