Spraying Grille Surround

Featured Replies

I've already resprayed it matte black once this week, now I've caught it with a bit of t-cut and I've took like 5 layers (and 4 precious hours) of hard-work away  ...

Any suggestions on how to smooth it out, make it unnoticible (doesn't stick out with edges and stuff) without having to completely respray the whole piece as I've got a serious lack of funds.

I've got various grades of wet/dry paper and a tiny trickle of primer left, about half a can of my matte black spray left.

How would I also go about making it rock-hard so that stones couldn't damage it easily? (I've thought of hairdryering it.)

if im honest there is always going to be problems with "doing it yourself"

i know you say you have a lack of funds but in all honesty

youd be better taking it to a bodyshop and getting it done properly !

would be much more resistant to some of the crap flakey roads we have in this country !

It's such a small piece, but the bodyshop prices are sky-high.. IMHO there is no problem in doing it DIY, I just need some guidance to prevent me from having to start over.

Have you put on a couple of coats of laquer? You can get it in a matt finish.

nigh on imposs imo to correct it in situ....need to get paint round the edges....

take it off and re do it...flatten it with 1000 wet n dry and put 2 more coats on...and hairdryer wont effect anything.

I knew to take it off haha. I was just lazy earlier hence the t-cut. You mean completely respray the whole thing w/primer? Should I use the wet/dry paper as wet?

take it off and flatten with 1000 grade wet ndry in warm water with fairy liquid in...then as long as no chrome showing 2 coats shud suffice..

Looks really good mate - looks very similar to mine (which is wrapped in 3m carbon fibre) from a distance but obviously more black when you get close up ;)

Thanks :) It's an 8 year old car, but I'm quite proud of the finish on my paintwork and the results with a can of spray paint!

Anyone think I could accidentally take my badge off (stuck on with foam trim tape) with my pressure washer?

Unlikely at least not for a while/ a few washes - and if it does just re-stick it.

So long as the foam tape is described as suitable for outside use (i.e. wet conditions) I can't see it would cause any issues so long as you don't intentionally try direct the jet behind the badge :smirk: in fact I'd be more concerned about taking paint off the grille - best way to avoid it is to keep a good distance between the nozzle and paint.

Out of interest do you know the part number of the badge? I am guessing it's an engine cover one :)

Yeah.. It's a bitch to get the correct curve though and is slightly smaller than the proper badge. You also have to take off all the bits off the back so it sits flush on a flat straight surface. I cut off as much as I could with scissors, then melted them and carefully sanded them down. I got 2, and they cost around 8 quid instead of the actual badges which cost 15 each.

1ZO 103 940 D - part number :)

Grille surround looks good, but lose the vRS badge, it's seriously uncool badging your car up to be 'better' than it is.

...it's seriously uncool badging your car up to be 'better' than it is...

I apologise that ya think it's 'uncool'. I have had severe depression over the past few months which started over 2 years ago when my mum had cancer. I started smoking dope and easily spent £3,500 on it over 6 months but I've stopped now.. I seriously felt down over other personal issues (family/girlfriend stuff) and my choice of car, I considered selling it since I was so down about it. I lost my job as well as being a student and ideally I would have sold it and bought the vRS in red but I can't afford the insurance, or the car now. (Baring in mind I'm actually 18.)

I've been planning on doing little things to my car to make me feel better bout stuff, every time I have an 'attack' of depression I just go polish it to take my mind off it. I don't really care if the badge makes it 'seriously uncool' seeing as Skodas are still a laughing stock around where I live (not that I care), I just want to make myself feel better about everything.
