Puddle Lights

Featured Replies

Does anyone know how you remove the cover to get at the puddle lights? Can you just remove the clear plastic or do you need to remove the outer coloured plastic first?

I want to replace the bulbs with some brighter LED ones

Thanks in advance

What are puddle lights??

Lights that shine down from the exterior mirrors. They come on when you unlock the car.

I thought they were already LED's?

Not on my L&K they aint. They are just as bright and the same colour as ordinary sidelight bulbs. The indicator bulbs are LED

Will have a look tomorrow.

What are puddle lights??

Did you think they only worked when it was raining Chris?!! :giggle: Are you a newbie all over again?

Hi Carl

think I can help again.

Changed mine into LEDs too. You have to take off the mirrorcover. The part that is painted in the color of your car.

I used a plastic spatula to unlock the clips that are positioned where the colored cover connects to the black underpart (the part where the puddle lights are in).

I will try to find some piccies.

If those clips are released, you will have to pull of the cover from the door away from the car upwards.

This is really anoying trying to describe something that is pretty easy once someone has shown it in "live".

Thanks Magic.

I replaced the wing mirror on the wifes old golf and it sounds the same process as that.

What type of bulbs are in there? W5W or others?

I used a single LED axial W5W.

You don't have them, the vRS doesn't get them...

All done and replaced with 5 LED W5W lights

Cheers all

Is it possible to retro fit these on the VRS? can someone with puddle lights take a pic of them sounds like a good mod to do if possible. Cheers

The wiring isn't there so you'd have to at least fix that plus change the segments over, so at least to start with it's a "not worth the cost" in my book.

In Germany they come with the auto dimming outside mirrors as a package.

I think you can.

I also dont think it's that hard actually.

The wiring is contained within the wing mirror. It has one main wire that then runs inside the door skin and connects in there.

So I'm pretty confident all you would need is a set of wing mirrors (no covers needed as you use your own) and a bit of coding with VCDS.

The down side is your looking at about £200 per mirror unless you can find some on EBay. You would need the mirrors of an L&K to be certain they had all the wiring. The only other thing that may throw in a problem is if the lights are activated by the Auto light sensor.

I don't think they are as I was able to test mine today by ensuring the headlights had been on. But you might be able to overcome that problem by activating coming home/ leaving home lights.

That would be the simplest way of doing it but unless you can find cheap mirrors your looking at around £400.

That assumes your car has the full wiring back to the loom, which many don't

As long as you have electric mirrors then you have the wiring. There are only 2 wires if I remember correctly.

Most vRS have elec heated mirrors so for the vRS it "should" work.

I haven't tried it but I may swap the L&K mirrors with my vRS mirrors one day to see if it works

IIRC there are 2 wires, plus an extra wire to control the puddle function. Certainly there is an additional wire inside the light and I was confident that there is an extra one to run all the way back too.

Still if people want to have a bash :)

I should think so too in 4 years!! still a newbie comment :giggle: and as a previous poster said you haven't them anyway . Wrong side of the bed Chris?

Just thought it might be interesting to know that my Elegance (2.0 CR 140 - week 22 build) came with puddle lights...

Only options I chose were mats, spare wheel, metallic paint and heated seats.

According to the attachment in post #7, it is only one wire that has to be connected to pin 1 in the connector. That one wire has to be routed through the wire loom though.
