DSG Blues

Hi Guys/Gals

I just got my new Octavia 2 1.4 TSI DSG estate in Singapore and it is fitted with the 7 Speed DSG gearbox, but its been giving us quite alot of problems. It stalls when i stop at lights apprently its due to the hot tropical weather in Singapore that is causing the car to stall so the new software was installed, but right now the gearshifts have been a bit cluncky there is a clunk when shifting from 2 to 1 and there is this while at low speeds in second gear is that normal? Will it go away? Should i complain to the dealer and get the box replaced? The dealership service is awful and it is nightmare getting anything done

Thanks

Regards

James

Hi James,

My dsg box occasionally gives me a clunky 2 to 1 downchange but like I say occasionally and I haven't picked up on a pattern to it yet. If your box is clunky all the time then that suggests that there is something going on with it that shouldn't be there as one of the talking points of the box is it's smoothness of shifting gears. There was a thread on here some time ago about the dual mass flywheel giving problems which gives rise to the clnky gearchange you describe, though unless there was a manufacturing fault which has shown itself early most of the respondants said there car had a few miles on the clock and were a few years old. Good luck on your search for a solution.

Ian.

My 7 spd DSG box has absolutely no clunks at any stage of it's operation. It is totally smooth whatever the circumstances. I would say that any gearbox which is not smooth is not operating normally and needs attention.

Well in all those high temperatures we had here recently, my car never faltered once, no clunks, no stutters, just constantly smooth gear-shifts.

I'd get it to the dealership asap, in case it's the mechanical side of it that's giving up the ghost.

I think the 2 to 1 clunk is down to the way the gearbox operates. It's complicated to explain, but having seen the animated video of the internal workings, things are much clearer, well it is to me anyway, but I'm no expert. (I found the video somewhere on a VW/Audi website, but don't ask me where, I can't remember).

I'll try and explain what I think happens. When, having slowed down almost to a standstill and the box is in 2nd gear, the box 'thinks' you're going to stop and pre-selects first gear in anticipation, but if you suddenly accelerate it catches the box on the wrong foot and it 'clunks' as it then has to suddenly pre-select third gear. This is most noticeable when approaching a roundabout and suchlike.

From what I recall from the video, the smoothness of gear changing is achieved by this 'pre-select' method, but it can get caught out.

I'm sure there will be someone on the site who will correct me if I'm wrong.

Off topic, Singapore is a beautiful country, and I loved seeing Skodas out there when I went there last year!!

Hello!

Thanks once again for the prompt and helpful replies, so far the gear shifts have been getting smoother , i have contacted the dealer and he has told us to wait and mointor the situation. We will wait and see , afterall the warranty period won't be up so soon so if it fails its still covered by teh warranty. So yup thanks Ian, Jrayworth, Evening Star, Mac and David for the replies. Thanks for the flattering comment about singapore, unfortunately cars here are really expensive and the family paid quite a bit for the octavia its about 3 times the list price of a DSG SE spec 1.4tsi and its really really not good value for money whatosever and they make you destroy teh vehicle after 10 years so its really a bad deal haha.

Thanks

James
