Top mount and bearings Question

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm about to fit my front coilovers the the VRS.

Quick question though, I have new top mounts and bearings. Am i correct in thinking that i will still need to take some part of the original shocks??

If not, how are the top mounts and bearings fitted to the weitechs?

Cheers for the help,

From what i can remeber you need to take the top bush and bearing from your old 1s or get new and put them on the new.

You should get instrutions with your weitechs to keep you right.

It is always a good idea to put new top mounts (rubbers and bearings) when fitting new suspension

yup you need to get this right, Bowders iirc put me right when i did mine, there is a nut you need (21mm iirc) that you need to use with your new topmounts/bearings.

have a search on the forum there should be a pic/vag diagram that is helpful.

reuse or replace old rear bump stops as are not included and cut down if you are going low!

Ok at the top of the front coilovers on top of the spring is the upper spring seat. The two bearings you've bought fit inside the two rubber top mount bushes. One of these completed top mount assemblies then slots on top of the upper spring seat and is held down by the upper spring seat retaining nut (which I think you can re-use from the existing suspension strut or buy a new one as Sweedish said).

So the order from top down is

upper spring seat retaining nut

top mount assembly (bearing inside rubber bush)

upper spring seat

spring

Ok,

I'll give that a bash! Is it obvious which way the bearing goes into the top mount?

STOO

Not sure, I'm paying someone to fit mine this week as I don't have a coil spring compressor and ramps.

Have a look at how they are fitted on your existing suspension when you take it off. I think the bearing just fits into the bottom end of the rubber bush into a recess.

There have been plenty of sets fitted on here before if you do a search I think someone like Bowders would have done a thread with photos.

Yep you sure do as it is a pain forgeting that nut :giggle:

As above you are forgetting that nut.

Order should be: bottom up.

Wetec springs fitted

Weitec spring top hat fitted

Replacement bearing fitted

Replacement top mount(rubber mount) fitted

reused or replacement inner nut fitted(this keeps teh whole suspension together prior to refitting to the suspension turret

Refit to turret with the spring cup and outer top nut(supplied with kit)

Job done

I have a DIY pics if required somewhere and ETKA drawing of all parts

:thumbup::thumbup: I sure do somewhere

I have spring compressors and ramps if anyone wishes to borrow.

Can do it without spring compressors but it does make life easier

Also recomend a hub seperateor tool (can get from VW for a tenner, skoda won't sell it to you) helps seperate hub and allow the old shock to fall out a dam site easier. You can use a crow bar or thick screw driver but you will need to use something else getting old shock out of hub will be interesting

Here are the exploded diagrams I posted last year: http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/134489-strut-shock-replacementrebuild-information/page__p__1684172__fromsearch__1entry1684172

Should explain everything. You don't have item 6 so don't worry about that. You will need to build items 7-11 onto the Weitecs. It's very obvious which way up the bearing goes when you see it.

+1

includes all the info you need in that thread including part numbers of any bolts that need replacing should you wish to replace with new.

Here is a pic of the parts drawing and refers to the inner nut that you should not forget to refit

Perfect! Thanks guys! I'll pick up 2 stainless steel 22mm nuts today!

Should they be nyloc? Or just normal nuts?

Also how tight should this nut be? Quite tight?

Thanks again

60Nm if you've got a torque wrench

Just do it up nice and tight :) and just to give you peace of mind when you have done that you can just get some tipex and put a nice white line across the nut.

Then you can give it a quike look over the next day or so and see if there is any moment.

Hi you should not need the 22mm nut that is what should come with your weitecs.(unless it was missing) in which case they are these. from any skoda , VW, Seat ar Audi dealer and are standard 21mm nylon nuts. (don't ask why weitec provide a 22mm one)

Outer nut, self-locking 21mm x2 part# N90 353 603 (top of suspension strut) [toque 60Nm] note when car on ground not in the air

What you need to buy is the Inner front strut nuts 18mm x2 1H0412365A in drawing item number 21, or reuse them from the old struts. But in my opinion get new so you can leave the old strut complete and just add your new bits to the weitecs.

inner nut should just be tight as i doubt you will get 60Nm on it.

Ok I'll just pick up two 18mm s/s nuts at work today then. I'll not need a skoda part surely?

Thanks for all the help again. Hopefully have pics up tonight

stop these are not just nuts, they are tappered slightly to hold in the bearing and top mount rubber bush.

Do not use any bog standard nut. reuse old one if you can't get to a dealer.

use what is designed for the suspension....

Ah ok, I'll go buy a 7mm Allen key and strip down the original struts.

Using a normal nut will lock the bearing and cause all sorts of problems.

If your taking the original struts apart dont just take the nut off or you could end up picking your head up of the floor :giggle:

You need Spring Compressors.
