Rear tyre wear

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I checked the tyres last night on 2.0 TDI 170 DSG which has covered just under 13,000 miles, my front ones are down to the wear band, which I was kind of expecting. However the rears are down the the wear band on the outside edges only, with plenty of tread left on the inside edges.

Is this normal? I am thinking not, any advise or suggestions welcome. I did a search but couldnt seem to find anything.

Thanks in advance.

I am no expert, but it sounds to me that either you have a tracking problem with the rear suspension or you are running the rear tyres at too low a pressure for the weight you are carrying in the rear of the car.

If indeed you are running too low a pressure in the rear tyres, it will allow the tread to fold under and you will be cornering on the outside shoulder of the tyre. This shoulder is not designed to take the wear and tear and will wear quickly. It is also dangeous as only a little more spirited cornering and you could take the tyre off the wheel, dig in the rim and risk flipping the car.

The Camber of the rear wheels is adjustable, and if it is wrong - with the low profile tyres can wear very fast.

When the camber is wrong, it can cause excessive wear on the inner or outer edge.

You need to get the full wheel alignment checked and adjusted by someone who really knows what they are doing.

I used a place in Chesham, Bucks - which is a 25 mile drive for me, but they came well recommended and did a really good job for about £70.

Has the rear of the car ever been jacked up in the middle of the rear beam? (not sure if this applies to the Superb MKII) as some vehicles have a sticker stating "do not jack" as it bends the beam slightly, this would give you positive camber on the rear which in turn would wear the outside edges of the tyres.

Superb2 does not have a rear beam, all 4 corners are fully independent.

My superb is still on its original tyres at 25K miles with loads of life left, and no unusual wear at the back end. The symptoms sound like a simple alignment problem, and should be sorted by a full proper 4WA. I had a full 4WA done one mine just after I got it, and before the 4WA the alignment was way out.

It could be down to the large-ish boot overhang beyond the rear wheels. I used to have this problem with my old Octavia (2001) especially when carrying lots of luggage/camping gear. The weight of the boot and its contents can cause a pendulum effect whilst cornering which takes its toll on the outer edge of the rear tyres.

I don't really carry anything in the boot though, and very rarely have a full passenger load.

I have had the front tyres replaced this morning, and the tracking checked, front was way out and the back was checked too.

Only issue I had was when I drove back, got the warning 'PLEASE CHECK TYRES' and the symbol lit up.

I pulled over to check pressures, all ok, reset the button by the gear lever, and seems ok now, touch wood!

Thanks for all the replies guys!

SJFISHER, I have the same issue. With my 170 elegance. Mine has done nearly 13k, and outside tyre has 2-3mm and inside 4-5. Like you only carry normally my self in the car, with the family ocassionaly.

I was suggested that it could be down the the pressure of the tyres. Like you I also did a 4wa and everything was within the Skoda's tollerances. I have lowered the pressure to 2.3 and have to wait,. Havent changed the tyres yet, but will soon with Michelins PS3's, and these are now on the front. So will have to give it another 12K and find out.

I am now running 34 psi in the back, and 32 psi in the front.

I did run 34 psi all round, but the last set of front tyres wore in the centre of the tread slightly more than the outer edges. I found it odd that this is the only car I have ever had where the recommendation is higher for the rear tyres compared to the fronts.

I am a bit anal about tyres, and check them at least every two weeks minimum.

Will report more as these new front ones wear.

Basicaly if tyres are wearing more in the centre, then the tyres are over inflated.

Wear on the edges only is down to wheel allignment or suspension problems or under inflated.

My orignal rear Michelin Energy 205/55/16 tyres were moved to the front axle at 25,000 miles, where they continued to 50,000 miles. At this mileage they still had 2.0mm of tread remaining, however, the nearside front edge was down to just over 1.6mm. This week they were replaced with the slightly softer compound Michelin Primacy's.

Such impressive tyre wear should keep the leasing company happy!
