205/45-16 or 195/45-16

Featured Replies

Hey there guys. Just a quick question really that I'm sure will get answered very easily.

Just got 2 new tyres for my car. And I've brought 195/45-16. The tyres that are on at the moment are 205s. I asked a guy at a tyre place before I ordered them and he said it would make no difference so seeing as though the same tyres were generally much cheaper in the 195 width I went for it. So, will they fit? The wheels are 7" wide I think.

By the way I spent 120 on uniroyal rainsport 2s as they had the best feedBack where I was looking. Good choice?

Many thanks, Pete

id imagine they'l go on with a bit of stretch

Assuming you're driving a Fabia vRS then they should be 205/45/16 as that's what they left the factory with!!

A difference of -1.52% or -9mm according to this site

Standard Fabia vRS rims are 16x6.5j IIRC

hes says there 7'' wide

just bought some 205/45 16s for mine, pirelli p zeros for £330!!! SHOCKING!!

no help to this topic but hey!

hes says there 7'' wide

Note the word "assuming" in my post, and the OP does not specify what rims he has ;)

They are 7" wide golf mk3 anniversary wheels. Is the 10mm going to make much physical difference really? As long as they fit and don't fall off when I trn a corner I'll be happy. Cheers for the 'help' so far :p

I didn't go for 205s as even the place I got them from seems to charge way more for that size than anything else. I basically don't want to go to the garage and have them say 'nah mate these are wrong and we've ****ed your old tyres taking them off.'

if the wheels are original then they are 6.5" wide are they not? and if they standard wheels are supplied with 205's then surely a wider tyre is needed to run a 7" wheel if you want to run the tyre normally with no stretch.

I have P Zero's 205/45/16 on the standard rims and they are great, personally id be going no narrower if i was getting a wider wheel, surely thats madness

First corner crash roulette - not a game i'd like to play :D

They are rare compared to most sizes

I know 205-55-16 are about £20 a corner cheaper than the 45 profile alternative.

Had it been standard wheels i'd have been on the "stick with 205 width" band wagon

however as you were running 205 tyres on wider wheels anyway it's up to you but i'm with E11HES - wider wheels should mean wider tyres not narrower ones surely? :S

Agreed, i wouldnt either run any narrower either, i run 7'' wide wheels on 205 pirrelli's and there great emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Is your insurance cover valid if you're running non specified tyres?

good question, ive always wondered how folk with ''stretched'' tyres go on regards insurance emoticon-0108-speechless.gif ??

Okay so, some quick maths says the wheels are 7" wide. Times that by 25 to get it into mm and you get 175. Ergo - 175 is the narrowest tyre I can run on them right? Without a stretch.

I'm gonna take them to be fitted tomorrow and see what happens. I'll post a pic or two when they're on xx

hmmm i like your thinking but i not sure it works like that.

if it did then a standard alloy at 6.5" wide is 162.5mm wide

tyres recommended and fitted at factory are 205m wide

making the tyre 42.5mm wider than the wheel which is almost 2"

so when centered on a rim the tyre would stick out almost an inch inside and outside which doesn't sound right...

Although i ain't no tyre fitter so you could be bang on! :)

According to this tyre calculator the 195/45/16 will be fine on anything between 6.5" and 8"

But you also have to bear in mind that the rolling radius will change with thinner width tyres as the '45' part of the sizing is the percentage of the tyres width, so the profile will be lower with these tyres.

This will throw out your gearing/speedo a certain amount.

ahhh balls, i'd forgotten about that, very good point Lewwy. i can definately cope with that though, for the reward of having some grip and having saved some money.

Julie D, that calculator has helped put my mind at rest also.

Just seen on another calculator that for 7" width 195 is the minimum that will fit, so i should be sound, i just dont want it to look like im running stretched fronts and normal rears.

just a quick update guys. got my tyres fitted last friday and so far no problems, they look different to the ones on the rear (205s) but in a good way i feel, they certainly arent stretched but you can tell that they're a narrower tyre. so far loving having some grip after having very very illegal tyres for the last 4 weeks but i think kwik fit have over inflated them, about to go check that now. would it igure that the steering is feeling a bit lighter than before with them being over inflated?

cheers foir the helps guys

pete xx

You may now find you get an ABS warning light, as the front to rear rolling radius is different. Profile 45 on 195 isn't the same as profile 45 on a 205 tyre.
