Hi guys and gals,

Managed to secure some 312mm setups which happen to have braided hoses attached to them......

- is it worth me using the braided hoses?

- if i am to fit them, is there any way of me having MASSIVE fluid loss between removing the old ones to fitting the new (cant clamp as i am taking the flexi hoses off)

- What fluid do you recomend?

Cheers :)

Your going to get fluid loss whatever you do.

The old school way to keep the loss to a minimum is to put a plastic bag over the reservoir opening and screw the cap back on.

( it creates a vacuum so the fluid wont flow as much )

Fluid?

My ibiza is filled with DOT5.1 - I also use it in my bike. Might just be sub-consious but it feels better than the DOT4 that was in.

5.1 is fully compatible with 4 but has better properties for ABS braking systems.

can we have a pinned something for this conversation please. and mabie a list of tools needed?

i have gone to fit mine today and have spent half the day trying to find out what size allen key is needed to split the calipers from the carriers!

before you say look at haynes - all's it says used the correct tool, it in no way says which tools are needed. i swear they used too????

i have done 2 trips to Halfrauds for an allen caliper tool...... the 8MM which is marked up as a VW caliper tool is to big (what looked by 2 mm) so i then procedded to Borrow a 6mm off a friend which is the equivalent of going to halfrauds (he lives round the corner from them) which i then find is wrong......... 7mm

i have searched on here. Fabia-Vrs.com only has a nice list of 'Do it its worth it and esy to do' and 'here is where you can get them'..........

Can anyone let me know what else i may be missing?

need a 7mm allen key for the calipers to carrier bolts

Wheel Brace

Screwdriver (philips)

a small selection of spanners (theres gonnabe a few 16mm in ther :giggle: )

Fluid to bleed through with......

????

???

??

?

Sorry just really wanted to get it done today and the weather permitted it........

brake cleaning fluid or white spirt to clean the discs after fitting i used a full bottle of fluid doing mine i think you have coverd everything else its a quick job to do only a few hours and most of that is jacking up wheels off ect oh and take it easy on the brakes for the first 100miles give them chance to bed in its worth the wait mate they are 10x better now

Don't use white spirit!

Use either brake cleaner, or methylated spirits

well got started, its really easy to do! but i forgot about that screw that holds the disc on........... anyone got a screw exacter i can borrow :smirk:

Yea didn't finish :giggle: still runnin 288s for the time. will sort it saturday B)

My mate done mine in his break at work. Was swapped in about 45min if that i think. Right toolage and nothing going wrong most jobs are pretty straightforward. However, when i got to do something, it normally has a problem, or i have to try and use the wrong tool because i have the right one missing  Makes even the most simple jobs a ballache.

Matt

Those screws can be a right PITA! Few hits of the screwdriver with a hammer usually free's them up.

another reason to change them, i noticed the bleed nippel had snapped on the drivers side..... didnt get a chance to check the passenger :giggle:

Would you say when just changing the fronts its worth bleeding the whole system?

as swapped my setup over last night and the braks work, a little better than b4, still a little spongey........ worth a full bleed?

was an intresting time fitting them. And mesuring them up to the old setup. will update that if i get a resolve. :smirk:

I only bled the fronts, and used an EZ bleed kit. Hardly any air was pulled through, as I had sealed the reservoir with cling film

If yours are spongey however, it might be worth doing the whole lot.

  • Author

oui oui spongey and sinks a bit if held.........

The odd feel to the new brakes will be that they need bedding in , takes a couple of hundred miles. Should feel more like the pedal is bouncing. If it does not improve then bleed the whole system again and pump about 1/2litre through each nipple.

he he nipple :giggle:

Thats how you spell it, I'm sure.

sorry being childish B)

Tickled your fancy Eh!

they ended up being 288mm  but we have everything resolved now
