Coolant light coming on occassionally

Featured Replies

Bought my fabia vrs 05 plate 3 weeks ago and 2 days after I had it the coolant light came on. Check the coolant level and sure enough it was about an inch down from the min line. Took it back to the dealer who just topped it up with water. For 2 weeks after it was topped up been driving it really econmically to see what miles I could get out of a tank coolant light never came on. This last week I ve driving at a normal pace occassionally using all the performace but definately not ragging it all the time. The other morning the coolant light came on again with the usual beeps and checked to see once again fluid level inch down. Did not touch the fluid level but now there seems to be no bleeps or warning light. Going to take it back to dealer who sold me it (not skoda dealer) but would anyone have an idea why its using the fluid. Surely if it was a leak would it not drain quicker? Also got P box fitted so don,t know if that would effect it .

Any help much appreciated.

Cylinder head gasket or header tank, the latter being the most common. Have them replace the coolant header tank and cap, and then see if the level drops when the car is pushed hard. If it does, head gasket will need to be replaced.

Tuning box shouldn't make any difference, but for that kind of fluid loss it's possible that something like the coolant temp sensor has been replaced but not seated properly against its O-Ring. Look for a pink-white crust around any joints. IME, the overflow on the header tank can be a bit 'over-eager' too, and mine often drains to near the Min line but no lower. If you can find any leaks from joints or sensors or from the lid or overflow of the header tank, this ebay guide is good for checking for HG failure, as long as you can bear to read it...

Thanks for the replies.

I have taken your advice and looked to see if its a head gasket problem. Everything in the engine looks fairly clean (although not a mechanic so probaly not looking at all the right places) and looking at the joints that I can see can't see any pink white deposits. Had a look at the HG check list and none of them seem to apply to me at the moment. Had a clio which the HG was going and the oil was almost like mayonnaise but luckily in the skoda the oil is not black no signs of any water in the oil. Dealer has asked me top it up with water and moniter it once more and will try pushing it hard to see it the fluid level drops again. Strangely though the warning light hasn't come on since a couple of days ago despite the fact I have topped it up from the below min line. Under a dealer warranty so hopefully this might cover it if anything needs doing.

When mine went, there was no big water consumption, or white deposits, just a pressure build up in the expansion bottle, enought to stay there till the next morning.
