Interested in buying one of these, perhaps with 4 wheel drive option. Are there any problems with either and will i incur increased maintainence/costs with a 4x4 option when servicing ect.

Thanks

Maintenance costs will be slightly higher due to the Haldex clutch needing an oil change occasionally, but it's small potatoes really compared to the other usual costs...

fuel consumption will suffer a bit and I would guess that tyre wear would be slightly poorer.

I guess you should also consider the fact that a car with 4WD is more complex, and hence more likely to go wrong (and cost you £££).

I had a Mk 1 4x4 Octy, tuned it to 356 bhp (from 150). managed to break the gearbox, stripped 3rd but all the 4x4 bits were fine. car had around 85000 on it when I sold it . The Mk 2 I believe is based on similar running gear so should be fine. haldex does need an oil change but I think its something like every 40000 miles, a bit of oil & a washer for the plug, small cost

One thing no one has mentioned is 4x4's are rarer so s/hand prices tend to hold up better, its also a lot more surefooted in the wet, cant put a value on that but nice to know theres less chance of falling off the road.

Tyre wear may be less as it dosent let you spin the front wheel. simply pushes power to a wheel that can grip. Fuel consumption on the Mk 1's was higher as they were shorter geared but our new scout with 6 speed seems to rev quite low at speed so I guess this may no longer be an issue.

If you can stretch to it look at the Scout, it may still have vat off, you get a lot more for your money & again I think resale will hold up better. We started looking for a 4x4 & after advice looked at the Scout

Whatever you are looking for if buying new price it up on drivethedeal.com Hopefully you can then go with them or get a dealer to match it which we did

Having had both the 4x4 1.9tdi and Scout 2.0tdi I can report that I get more mpg from the Scout...
