Has any one really pushed their car to the limit ?

Featured Replies

Even with my (old) power in 2007 I couldn't get the mongrel above 135mph indicated over a 3km stretch from standing start (with room allowed for braking too)

They simply don't like going that fast, so I say, "Sod top speed. Acceleration & handling = king!"

really? I've seen 141mph on the satnav (with the speedo actually reading about the same) in the Ibiza with just a hybrid turbo. it had revs left, but I chickened out and I'm not sure how much road it would've needed to use them all up

Top speed is the quickest way to kill a turbo in my opinion..

Lots of heat with wide open throttle for so long, intercooler gets hot, turbo gets hot which in turn makes intercooler hotter etc..

If im having a blast it's usually up to no more than about 110 indicated..

Yes, I forgot about turbo preservation :D I am in the fairly fortunate situation to have an EGT gauge and even on a 1/4 mile run, it gets a bit HOT :D

ive had my 1.9 sdi mk1 do 110 speedo, so probably 107 real. And when ive measured against my gps there is only a 3 or mph over read. And i think i could of squeezed a little more. The talk of the sdi being horribly slow seems a load of rubbish to me. Granted it is my first car, but I have driven a vw carravelle 2.5tdi, saab 95 aero 2.3 T, renault megane 1.9 dci. And to me the SDi is a perfectly capable engine, aslong as you have a heavy right foot. Im always passing other cars just fine. God knows what a vrs would be like for me.

I've seen an indicated 140mph on the clocks, but as said, that will be wrong. Probably, realistically, about 125 or something.

Handling wise.

On the limit.................

The speedo was wound all the way around for these runs. My car is a stock BLT (148bhp on a rolling road) and we were two-up and heavy with kit. Downhill 140mph would be feasible, but the car felt very, very, light at these speeds. And I have uprated suspension (Eibachs, FSDs, Jabba RARB).

I once went head to head with Shiftys old Fabia (special road obviously) and once he had taken the light pods off’ it seemed to have a higher top speed than my 123D. My car was rated at 149mph top speed so I got the impression Shifty’s car was even higher! Admittedly it was stripped out and produced a fair bit more power. But I wouldn't be suprised if a 190bhp Furby could easily crack 140mph.

130mph indicated in my pd100.

I use to go see what every car i had maxed out at once i`d owned it for a while, but i didnt bother with the fabia. Taken it up to 3 figures, but its quick enough for me, so i dont need to try and go flat out to be happy with it. Rather rapid 0-60 than a high top speed personally

Just out of interest what temperature does it run just normal driving and what does it go up to when pushed say on a 1/4 strip

On a 70mph motorway run in 6th, EGTs are usually about 230-250 degrees. This is measured right in the exhaust manifold, just pre-turbo, so is the most accurate sensor position for "real" EGTs. Before my turbo blew the sensor was in the exhaust downpipe just off the turbo and whilst OK for getting idea of EGTs it would have under-read by perhaps 100 degrees over the temps in the exhaust manifold itself.

On a 1/4 mile strip I saw temps of about 650 to 700 degrees going over the finish line. I see 500+ just going up a sharp hill on a motorway in 5th gear at 80mph - not even accelerating. Cut-off for doing serious harm to the turbo is about 850 to 900 degrees celsuis, and thankfully it seems my setup is good enough that even on track I never really see temps above about 750 degrees. I wouldn't like to keep it at that kind of EGT levels though for too long (i.e during a top speed autobahn attempt)

thanks for that i never knew it would reach that kind of temps makes me more glad i always let mine tick over to cool before i turn it off

even on a quarter mile.... sitting in the queue and booting it my water temps had risen from 90 degree's to 100 degree's :o

Another brucey bonus of removing all my A/C is that the water rad is vented much better. I don't really suffer from high water temps at all, even on track.
