dab radio/standard HU

Featured Replies

Is it possible to fit dab radio and still keep the standard skoda symphony HU in the same way you can add an aftermarket cd changer?

In theory, yes, you would just need a DAB radio with an aux output which would plug into the back of the Symphony.

Is there any particular reason why you want to keep the Symphony though? It is dreadful...

Rob.

I agree with Rob, bin the symphony and get a blaupunkt dab52 or 53 or 54.

Trouble with changing the HU, is that other ones never look as good in the car. The factory one looks to suit the dash. It also makes the car look low rent when you change as it is like the days when cheap cars didn't have a stereo and you had to fit your own.

How do you change the Furby stereo? It is not standard size, looks about twice the height as a standard third part HU?

However, you should judge a stereo with your ears, not your eyes... :D

I know where you're coming from, but if you're attaching a digital radio, etc. then chances are it's not going to look standard anyway.

The front of the standard HU is slightly larger, hence the need for a fascia adapter when doing a change.

Rob.

Slightly larger?? In my dads Furby TDi elegance it is twice the depth of the standard size stereo in my Octy??? When I changed the stereo in my old Octy LX it needed a thin fascia adapter but the Furby would need somthing else to slot into dash below a replacement or a grat hole would be left!

As for sound quality, I think this is nonsense. A car wit engine, ventilation, air friction and road noise is much to noisey an environment to appreciate the subtlies of an expendive stereo. You will notice the difference sitting ignition off in your drive, but I defy you to appreciate the difference when actually driing. Save your money for a decent home hi fi system.

Well, you're entitled to your opinions, but I know for a fact that when I swapped my Symphony for an aftermarket head unit, I could actually hear it properly and there was less distortion. Obviously not a patch on home hifi, but then the whole car cost about the same as that...

Rob.

God just reread my post. My typing was on top form there :).

I dont think the Symphony is *that* bad, the main problem for me is it is underpowered. It needs amping and subwoofering, and if you do that, it should sound pretty decent IMHO.

Considering I am used to hearing a high quality seperates system in the house, I just dont think its as bad as some people say.

But you drive a Fabia... :)

And once you've gone to the effort of putting an amp and a subwoofer on the Symphony, you might as well just buy a decent HU which will be nicer to use, sound better and have more features!

Rob.

Dont you agree that the stealth appeal of the stock HU as William says could well be a good thing...

I dont deny that an upgraded headunit will have better features, but nicer to use? I find most aftermarket ones have pathetically small buttons and I'd even go so far as to say some are downright dangerous, like when the contacts for the removable face plate start to go and the unit stops responding, or worse stops responding when i'm upping the volume, resulting in a nearly blown pair of speakers like what happenned to me in the past. The stock unit has big buttons and is very clear and easy to use.

Also, I cant be bothered to carry around a faceplate everywhere like I did in the past...

blaupunkt woodstock dab52 or 53 or 54 who found any good deals?

one slight worry as i don't no much about Audio

could it mess the speakers up

as its loader allthough it is in the Skoda Accesories Catalogue

why does everyone like lemmings go for a "blaupunkt dab52 or 53 or 54" ? - there are other units out there which can be bought with CD & DAB radio (if DAB is all you really want) for much, much, less. There are some Skoda dealers will also fit in a blanking piece above your new unit which is an official part to make it look a proper job, no gaps. I'm getting my dealer to do mine next year.

Isn't the Blaupunkt the first combned unit. IMHO it sounds great, looks nice too, and I'd be happy to put it in my car. Only thing that I can't be bothered with is the Aerial and the fact it would probably be nicked.

To show you the size of the Fascia adapter plate....

The std Fabia h/u is only marginally bigger than a std DIN aperature.

Could that space above the HU be used for CD storage? If you had something like the flip-out cupholder, but horizontal, you could get a couple of CDs in there.

Anybody seen something like that?

Vauxhall do a DIN sized CD holder for the Astra iirc (MK4) it holds 4 CD's.

I have a Woodstock DAB52 in my Octavia and would certainly recommend this unit or the later 53 or 54 units.

They are certainly closer in aesthetics to OEM fit than someof the other aftermarket units!

The other option is to keep the std head unit and get a Revo DAB unit with in car adaptor - you should be able to connect the output of the Revo to the aux input on the Symphony - you canalso get a portable or home adaptor kit for the Revo, so you can use it elswhere as well - excellent bit of kit!
