Resurrecting a post of old but for anyone who is thinking of doing this conversion you can also use the same method and parts in the write up but instead of using Boxster front calipers: 986.351.421 and 986.351.422 you can use 911 / 996 s rear calipers: 996.351.421 and 996.351.422. The only thing to note is the 986.351.421 uses larger pistons in the caliper but to be honest, I've tested both and cannot tell the difference.

The huge advantage of using the 996 calipers is the fact that you don't need to swap the bleed nipples and link pipes, as the 996 rear calipers are already mounted on the front side of the axle, as per Octavia fronts. You also DO NOT have to file away the locating pins to adapt the 25mm disc as the 996 already uses a 26 / 27mm disc.

The 996 rear caliper is exactly the same size as the 986 front but with all the work already done for you and because all VAG tuning threads mention using the 986 fronts you can pick up the 996 rears for a lot less money. I got a pair off a 2004 996 C4S for £175, the brake pads in them were almost new (only 0.5mm worn), they had the anti squeal shims fitted too. £35 for powder coating, £3 for Porsche / Brembo stickers, £4 for a tin of good quality clear coat. Apart from that everything else is exactly the same as the original write up. You will need the adapters for the 986 to 112 VAG converstion and VAG to Brembo hoses.

All in the conversion has cost me just under £400 including new pagid 312mm discs.

Are the piston sizes the same?  IIRC daveB did the maths on the boxster caliper vs OEM to check that they were suitable in terms of maintaining your braking balance.  Not saying the 911 rears are wrong, just that you need to check they'll work with the oe rears/master cylinder etc.

Nope, as above, they're smaller on the 996 rears.

To add some information about compatible wheels BBS SR 17x7.5 5x112 ET45 clear this setup with about 8 mm of clearance with the spokes without the need for spacers.

Im trying to do this brake upgrade but running into issues

With the pistons pushed fully in, and using a 25mm thick disc and brand new EBC red stuff pads, the caliper isnt wide enough to fit the disc and pads??? :(

Are different pads different thicknesses please?

Has anyone else had this issue?

It was tight when I fitted them. I had to leave out the vibration dampers to get it to fit.

If it's the pads you might have to linish some friction material off.  How much is it interfering by?

Are you sure you've removed enough length off the pad retaining pegs?

  • 2 weeks later...

I haven't needed to shorten the pad retaining pegs; the 25mm disc fits without fouling? Why have you needed to shorten them please? The gap is bigger than 25mm.

The problem I'm now running into on my Passat is that the bottom of the caliper fouls the disc, where the hard line runs across with the rubber sleeve on. Photos below. Hmmm why is this please?

Looks like I need to space it out a few mm?

What I don't understand is the Passat previously had the audi TT mk1 312mm carriers on, and all fine, so I shouldn't expect any positional differences between my Passat and the mk4 Golf etc?

Hmm actually it might be because the calipers don't need flipping on the Passat, as the caliper is already on the rear.

Any ideas?

Ah maybe the carriers aren't symmetrical and I have the wrong side fitted on the wrong side?

Sorry for all the posts... Don't seem to be able to edit them

Ok now fine, that lower hard pipe was just bent :)

What the tightening torque for the radial Allen head bolts please?

Also how have people supported te aftermarket hoses to stop chafing?

312mm disks. Cheap availability and large choice of disc manufacturers to choose from. :)

I have some available in the for sale section if anyone is interested.

A mm or two of powdercoating soon narrows that gap.

I am looking at the possibility of doing this on a 1.8TSi Octy 3 as opposed to going for the standard VRS brakes. I like the idea of keeping the stock disks and the ability to run smaller wheels.

Don't think many have done this on the newer car. Anyone know the best way to get hold of DaveB these days to find out? I could put in 10 posts on the golf forums and PM him but I assume there is an easier way?

I've always found getting hold of DaveB virtually impossible.

Doesn't the Mk3 VRS have 340 mm discs on the front?

You need to consider that while the NQSBBK uses a 312 mm disc it needs more clearance around the front face of the disc. While you "could" fit a 16" wheel over the NQSBBK I think you'll have trouble finding some that have enough clearance behind the spokes. You could solve this with spacers, but I personally don't like them. You'll need 10 mm + of spacing each side I would think.

The 340 mm set up will take a 17" minimum wheel, but should fit almost all Skoda wheels without the need for spacers.

Just my opinion.
