Coolant issue!

Featured Replies

Hello all

This may seem a simple thing to ask but my little Skoda Fabia 1.4 8 valve seems to be loosing water. After about 100 miles or so the water will drop below the Minimum line on the bowl and there does not seem to be any obvious sign of leaking.

Dip stick oil seems to be ok (not discoloured) a little discolouration of oil on the oil cap tho possibly due to short trips maybe?

I was worried for the head gasket but apart from a little water loss i dont seem to have any other symtoms such as over heating or smoke.

One thing I dont quite know is that when my Mrs has been driving the car on longer runs (i.e 100 miles or so) she has had the blowers on full cold.Would this cause the Fabia to use more water from the cooling system?

Any help at all would be brilliant

Thanks

My car is losing coolant. 2 years ago the coolant light came on so I checked and the coolant level was just below minimum. I topped it up to maximum and 2-3 weeks later the same thing happened. This same rigmarole has been going on now for the last 2 years except the coolant light doesn't show anymore so I have to manually check every fortnight and top up. It's bugging me as I know I shouldn't have to keep doing this.

I've had 2 water pressure tests (at different independent garages) and asked a third independent mechanic to take a look but they can't find a water leak anywhere and they all keep telling me not to worry about it. Surely it's not normal to keep having to top up your coolant level every 2-3 weeks and during the winter it's costing a fortune in anti-freeze. Am I just being unlucky in having 3 garages palm me off because I'm a woman. It's worrying as I don't know what to look for. it must be a very slow drip drip as there's never a puddle of water anywhere etc. I looked at the coolant level thread but those 4 things mean nothing to me hence why I took it to a garage and ask them to check it out for me but all they say is "dont' worry love!"

This sounds really silly, but have you tried parking on a slope? When my water pump broke on my Fiesta it only ever leaked if the front of the car was facing uphill. might be worth trying it out!!
