short shifter: forge or TTS?

Featured Replies

Considering fitting a short shifter on the vrs.

I've read this thread which is great and has some comparison between the OE, TTS and the NEUSPEED short shifters.

I'm probably going to go with the TTS shifter ( 8J0 711 046-B ) but before I do I would be interested in any feedback on the FORGE one - JKM have these for about 60 quid.

Any advantage over the TTS item? I don't want to go too extreme (wife also drives the car)..

:)

Just seen this Rob, and I'm considering the same options as your good self.

Think the general consensus is that for a slight, but noticeable improvement over OEM - go for the TT/S3. The next level is Forge, and then maybe Neuspeed (can't be certain but IIRC the Neuspeed has an even shorter action).

If you share the car, then your wife might not appreciate a huge change, so the OEM+ option might be preferable

Cheaper too!

Let me know what you decide (if you haven't already, in which case what I've just written is largely redundant )

Cheers,

Steve

I'd be interested in this as well

Its all your fault Steve :p lol lol lol

Not the first time that's been said, that much is true.... ;)

The TT/S3 one has a 20% shorter shift (10cm instead of 12.5cm front to back).

The neuspeed shifter also has a non adjustable shorter shift. Shorter than the TT/S3. (ask Bahnstormer he had a neuspeed shifter).

The forge is adjustable and can be adjusted to a very short shift. AFAIK shorter than the neuspeed. Next to that, Forge also has an adjustable side shifter.

Driven both the Neuspeed & S3.

IMHO:

Neuspeed

Positives - wonderful when you are out for a proper blast or a track day and is a thing of beauty to look at!

Neagtives - Price & can be tiresome in stop start traffic!

S3

Positives - improves the shift throw over standard & Price

Negatives - Not as noticeable as the Neuspeed & looks just like standard. Oh and SWMBO prefers it

Never tried the Forge, but I've been told that because of it's level of adjustment you should be able to get it just how you want it, so that may be a good compromise if true!

Thanks Magic - got it nearly right then :)

The Forge could be the best overall compromise then, it looks like. And not a bad price considering its benefits - was circa £75 from Awesome, which is cheaper than from Forge direct :) - plus I can pass by and collect! Not sure how it worked out if you factored postage into the equation mind you.

Steve

I bought the TTS shifter but its not fitted yet. Been busy with other things..

Cost £22 quid from the audi main dealer up the road, so its hardly going to break the bank.

My wife drives the car so i wanted something that felt OE. I plant to get it on the car in the next few weeks but its not really a priority.

thats cool :D think i might have to invest in one ;)

silly question but do you have the part number?

oh never mind this post

Did you read the first post in this thread? emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

 believe it or not YES!

Tired and feelin like $hit so not thinking straight.....................sorry :(

Hé, no hard feelings, its sunday, late and the end of the weekend. emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

I fitted the TTS shifter to my other car which is a Seat Altea and I didnt really notice any difference. Maybe a little closer from 3rd to 4th. On the vRS I have a Sigma 6 short shifter which is sooooo much shorter front to back and side to side. The only problem with the sigma is the price. Around £200 more than the TTS, but I think its worth it.

Bloody 'ell - £220 for a short shifter? Is it made from gold?

Thought the Neuspeed one was pricey :o

But its soooooo nice:

The dieselgeek site shows this at $195 which is more like £125 at current rates..

Alex - where did you get yours? Uk supplier or direct.

How long to fit (if you're doing it/chargable?)

This one does both front and back AND side to side reduction. The Forge/Neuspeed/TTS ones only do front-back reduction AFAIK?

I got mine really cheap from a customer who was putting his Golf back to standard. He bought his direct from them, but I do keep them in stock. I have to charge you vat and the duty + delivery we get charged when they come over, but if you buy direct you may avoid the vat and duty. We charge £195 + vat for them.

If you get one then its 30 mins to fit which comes to £30 + vat. There are very good instuctions on their site, but they are still a pain to set up perfectly.

Forge does have an extra side short shifter, which is also adjustable.

But the Forge site states for both parts " Skoda Octavia MK1 1.8T and MK2 (up to 2006) ", Is this including 2006 ? how can I tell if my 56 can use it or not ?

As they didnt change anything to the gearbox of the MKII, it will fit. All MKII VRSes have the MQ350 gearbox (also the diesels), so this is the side shifter that will fit.

It's the black plastic spring loaded connector on the end of the cable that's a different size (the shifters have two different "pin" sizes IIRC and it's this that is dependent on the age of the car AFAIK). I certainly bought the alternative one to what was fitted on mine, just in case! They are reasonably cheap and dead easy to swap. In the end I didn't need it, so passed it on to another Brisky member who did!

That is correct. IIRC at first these kits were supplied with only one diameter pin. Now they should have both.

It is also stated at the bottom of the link:

The Unit is supplied with both pin and ball fixings to suit either type of cable fixing, as found on these vehicles.

Up to and including 2007 models the original side to side shifting mechanism on these vehicles should be made of metal with the 2008 and onwards models having the original side to side mechanism made of plastic. (on all models the throw or front to back mechanism is made of metal ) We supply within the kit the necessary parts to allow fitment to both types.

just a quick update; i had my TTS shifter fitted today by Alex at Backdraft Motorsport.

very pleased with the result - not a massive change (which is what i was looking for) but about 20mm or so taken from the overall throw front to back, but still feels completely OEM, no change in the quality of the shifting or notchiness.

For the £ this is very effective, the part cost me £21-ish quid from the local audi dealer, plus 35 quid to fit. Very happy with the result!

Had a quick stir of Alex's "sigma 6" shifter on his car to compare - its MUCH shorter again, and feels like a race car - to be honest, its a bit too extreme for me but i can see the attaction - happy with my choice of the TTS part.

.. just need to get my arse in gear now and get my shark map sorted out. its all good. :p

Thanks for the review Rob - useful stuff

Decisions decisions - why aren't you nearer Manchester?! ;)

Cheers,

Steve
