Rain Light Sensor and auto dim rear view mirror intall guide

Good news AMB_1

Here are 2 screenshots from both my Octavia's

First is from a Mar 2007 vRS (which doesn't have Auto Lights/ Wipers hence it is not ticked)

Screenshot2010-08-11at141157.png

Second is from a Jun 2008 L&K (Which has both Auto Lights/Wipers which is why it is ticked)

As you can see both have the option for Rain/Light Sensor so you should be ok as long as you have that Option

All you should need is New Switch, Sensor, Wiring & a tick in that box and hopefully it should work. You then leave the wiper stalk in the Intermittent position and you adjust the sensitivity of the wiper by moving the wiper speed button. It works from left to right with left being least sensitive & right being most sensitive.

Thanks for the info Carl , mine is a sept '07 car so hopefully I will be ok, having a 60,000 KM service tomorrow so will double check while car is plugged in to VCDS.

Another question for u olly, the PDF guide lists two mirror cap covers and trim headliner connector...is this the part that covers the wiring between headliner and mirror? As this article is for the golf would these be different from the octavia, the photos that simbo has supplied look different to the golf...

Cheers...

Depends on where you are getting your mirror from, if it's a new one from Skoda then you want the covers to match.

Thanks again for the info olly. In summary ive bought the loom off ebay and a new 1K0 955 559 AH rain sensor off ebay, sensor came to 36 euro's. I contatced my local friendly VAG dealer and he is awaiting a price for the glue but the interior mirror and mounting plate were cheaper than i expected. He is also awaiting on a price on the skoda (green back lighting) light switch with tunnel position. The parts I priced from VAG were taken straight from the PDF and thus are golf mk5 spec (the mirror is a slightly different shape on the octavia - rounder edges) so I have contatced him to price the following parts as supplied by olly, although im sure the golf parts would fit and work no prob.

One thing to note the parts i've given you are for a 2010 Octavia i.e the latest part numbers for each item I doubt it will make any difference for a rear view mirror and the rainlight sensor AH are all the same I guess is either an improvement or change of supplier than previous ones.

Let me know how you get on, I have the rain light sensor "AH" already just need the rest of the items but this golf park assist retrofit is taking ages due to parts needing to come direct from germany. I think the auto mirror, lights and wipers retrofit will be hard to keep under the £150 option so it won't be a money saving retrofit, however, if like me you forgot to add it then at least you can have this option.

Have you tried taking the mirror off the window yet, I see this as the most difficult.

Another thing you will have to do is mount the new mirror lower take a look at the guide and you will notice when the new mount is glued to the windscreen there is a small round circle. This is where the old one was mounted so you can't see the glue from the outside. By moving it lower the conduit will not be long enough hence why he has used black shrinkwrap.

I'm not overly happy about having my mirror mounted lower and the factory screens come with the mount attached. I think I may look at getting a new windscreen.

I havent tried removing the exsisting mirror yet, I am waiting to get allt he parts first and then attempt the entire job as quick as I can. I had the different codes for the various different octavia windscreens i.e. with and without sun tint and with and without mount for rain sensor but I cant find...I am going to try and call autoglass over the next few days and get a quote for a new windscreen but im thinking it will be big money...would be a great time to get a nasty stone chip and get insurance to cover the cost B)

I had a similar idea I just don't fancy getting a cheap pilkinton replacement that autoglass often use. Can you demand OEM when you insurance claim windscreen.

Yes you can demand an OEM one you may just have to wait while they get it in.

Just spoke to autoglass Ireland, they quoted me a price of approx 250-300 euro for a replacement windscreen with the light sensor mount....that was a rough price excluding fitting I am awaiting a call back for the actual price. I have gotten prices back on the other parts:

Mirror auto dimming satin black

1k0 857 511 d 9b9 162.90 euro

The covers are

1k0 858 548 left cover 4.46 euro

1k0 858 548 right cover 4.46 euro

cable conduit

1z0 857 593 b upper 9.03 euro

1z0 857 594 b upper 9.03 euro

Interestingly I was quoted only 48 euro for the golf spec auto dimming mirror in stain black (the part quoted in the PDF guide) which is way cheaper than the octavia one.

I am still awaiting a price on the light switch with tunnel setting.

I spent 54 euro all in for a new AH light sensor off e-bay and 37 euro on the loom ( both prices include postage).

So this is getting really expensive!!!!!!!!!

I am not sure what direction to go with this project...the instaliation of the retaining plate DIY looks very messy and as pointed out if it sits very low it may look awful and obstruct vision out the windscreen. The PDF guide is a bit vague..the author mentions useing a lighter to remove the button glue (old mirror mount) but the photos later on clearly show the old mount with the new one sitting bellow it...

what he means is use a lighter to get the glue tacky so u can pull the roind plastic mount off. then use a scrapper to remove remaining glue. this still leaves u with the round black dot as this is to cover up where it is glued from the outside.

im annoyed i forgot to spec this £150 option as i can see it costing 3x as much to retrofit correctly. I don't think id be happy with mouting the mirror lower as i reckon it will obstruct your view. i might just try it and if its lousy i will probably launch something through my windscreen and get a new one.

thats interesting id like to see a side by side of them as that is a huge price difference.

With all of this, I'm just glad the Elegance has one as standard :p

I must say though, I probably still prefer to decide myself when to use wipers! Even with adjusting the sensitivity, I still find it can be quite slow to respond to precipitation :)

Mine isn't.

It even goes off when I get someone elses wash fluid on the screen. Set on default sensitivity too.

Can be a little slow though if it's raining when I first get in the car. Usually by end of the road though it has kicked in

i will swap you my rear view mirror and headlight switch so you can get rid of it if you prefere the manual way!

Just heard back from autoglass, 257 euro for a new screen including fitting and VAT, most likely it's alot cheaper in the UK as the tech explained that the price is based on the availability of the screen and it's a safe guess that there are alot more octavias in the UK than Ireland. There are 4 screens available for the octavia, with and without a tint strip and without and with mounting plate for sensor. Any one with ETKA able to find the part numbers as I would prefer an OEM screen as opposed to an other one .

Interestingly Irish spec RS's have rain/light assist as standard but pre facelift elegance don't . Mine is a UK spec car which I bought with 4k in the clock and had all the other extras I wanted I.e. Xenons, rear park sensors but lacked the light/rain assist!

Just found these:

Standard green screen - 1Z0.845.011BB

Green with sensor - 1Z0.845.011AP

Im sure most of us would be looking for a Green Screen wit sensor and top grey tint....unfortunately I dont have the code for this!

i will have a look when i get in as im using my phone now. just make sure that price isnt for a pilkinton screen which is often used instead of oem by autoglass and RAC. They are much lower quality, ive even seen one start to delaminate, although that was some time ago.

  • 9 years later...

I know that this is a very old thread. But I have a similar project.

Is the install guide still available anywhere?
