Lag After Fitting New Turbo

Featured Replies

I had my turbo blow on my fabia and replacing it I chose to fit a garett over a kkk. But it seems to me that's there's a slight hesitation when I put my foot down. Any ideas?

When mine went i had a refurbed turbo fitted.

Not sure if it was or is now a garett or kkk, however, the refurbed unit definitely has more lag than the original. The off boost spool up around 1250-1500rpm is much slower and smokey.

Overall the new blower has made the car significantly quicker though.

I was thinking/hoping it might loosen up a bit and improve. After about 4500miles it has maybe improved slightly but not really any different......

Most likely the VNT isn't setup correctly.

Is it adjustable? Easy to do?

Was it PD130 KKK to PD150 Garrett?

Have you had the map adjusted at all?

Will depend exactly what you've had fitted, as Jabbasport say. If it's a PD150 Garrett spec, then they're more laggy than the PD130 KKK. Just a function of their design. They do provide more power when they're on-boost though.

So to get the best from it, you'll have to get a suitable map loaded for it.

Would you say there would be a reasonable gain from having it adjusted to suit? Or just to make sure the car is running right? Mine is running 170bhp/270lbft at present.

I am still running mapping for the original KKK, with the 150 Garrett on mine, and it goes well. Only a tiny bit more lag that I noticed.

Everything seems in good order, I just don't want to be doing damage to anything if it is essential to have the remap 'tweaked'. (can you actually tweak a generic map??)

Si.

Well you've got a more capable turbo fitted; it makes sense to make the most of it

Tweaking a generic map would just involve loading a map more suitable to a PD150-equipped car really.

True, but is it worth the cost of another remap to get say another 5bhp? Or would you see more than that?

no point as your smic will become heatsoaked!

at a guess on a harsh run i'd say it will already suffer heat soak, my old fabia remapped to 173bhp used to get chronic heatsoak on a long run....

if you get a fmic you could get 190-195bhp with a pd150

Sorry for the late reply. No it's a 130 kkk to a 130 garett I'm going to get a fmic soon as my smic is leaky. I've not noticed any extra smoke but I have only driven it slowly and in the dark

What's involved in sorting this?

i thought you were uprating...

cant see the point in whacking a garrett 130 on.

the reason everyone slates the kkk is because it is installed in 90% of vrs's obviously its blow out rate will look immense to the garrett

i doubt theyre will be much in them

Midland turbo said the garett is a better and stronger. Also it was slightly cheaper. Was going upgrade but it seemed a waste of a extra £300 when I can't afford to do any other mods

seems like you have answered your own question there, keep it as it is.

garret and kkk 130 should react no different in terms of lag

That's what I assumed. But I didn't know if the problem people have with hesitation is down to the type of turbo. What years did garrets come on? Mines a 54 plate made in jan 05. What engine type will I have a Blt or asz?

Sorry for noob questions

early 05 = asz ! will say on ur v5 to confirm

it was a lottery, theres no set in stone year....

90% possibly more are KKK

stutter is egr related on blt engines

Done by good tuning companies, if the expected boost point is not right. The N75 valve controls the VNT vacuum unit, and the VNT vanes should start to move at a certain boost demand. It is adjusted using the rod from the VNT vacuum control, to the VNT arm on the turbo.

As far as I know, and from information on this forum, Fabia VRS cars were never fitted with Garrett's as standard (apart form a few very early press cars given out for reviews).

I think the PD130 engines in VW's have Garretts but that all Fabia VRS's have KKK's. I think this is what causes the confusion.

Mine was supposed to be a like for like replacement. Midland Turbo who also did my refurb didn't say any different and i didn't ask for an upgrade so i assume it is still a pd130 turbo.

Seems we have a similar change in lag characteristics.

I haven't had the car remapped and as far as i know it is standard.

I like the bigger shove of the new unit but the lag is a little annoying.

Humm.. i guess it might be worth having a specialist look at it to see if it can be adjusted and improved. Not really interested in a remap though as car already has 136k on it and i'd rather not fork out for a new clutch just yet!

Mines remapped. Tbf it might just be me once the car is worn in I will have to give it a good pacey run.
