Columbus questions

Featured Replies

Right, finally got around to buying a Columbus so I'm going to have a few questions. 2 to start with:

1) Does anyone have the part number for Climatic fascia surround in silver? The Climatronic one is listed in the 'useful parts' thread but not the climatic.

2) Many of the ones I have looked at include one of these but the one I have doesn't. Will I need one of these to be able to connect to my standard aerial?

3) Stu installed OEM bluetooth for me a while back - it's the older version so I gather I won't be able to use certain functions, but wiring wise (leaving aside coding for now) do I just need to stick the quadlock from my Stream into the Columbus and the bluetooth will function?

More technical ones to follow I'm sure, appreciate any help.

you may need a 2 into one fakra connector depends on whats in your car best to check have a look. if you do i have one spare as i bought it thinking i would need it before id even taken delivery of the car. as it happened i didnt need it. your for a 10 and i will post it over.

yes you can just plug the quad lock in and thats it done. you may want to change the routing of the mic so you can get voice control working.

1) You can't get a Silver trim for Climatic & MFD3. You have to get the Black one and either Carbon Wrap it or Spray paint it. VW Satin Silver is a near perfect match

2) No your MFD3 will work just fine you just wont be able to listen to AM frequencies. Just make sure you plug your aerial into the connection nearest the centre of the unit to get FM.

3) Yes just plug your Quadlock into the back of the MFD3

I know I've only got a single aerial plug from when I swapped my Stream over a while back - presumably this takes my 1 and splits into the 2 inputs on the Columbus? Voice control sounds interesting, I'll do a search for some info.

Odd that one isn't available. I've found some metallic satin silver spray paints on eBay like this, but I guess I need a matt one? Not very handy with painting so might just go for the standard black :(

If I use Olly's lead above does that sort the AM issue Carl?

Yes I have a kufatec 2 into 1 and the reception is fine for both AM & FM

Could anyone elaborate on this a bit? I've read a few websites including the guide here but, not having installed the bluetooth kit myself, I'm a bit confused on exactly what I need to do to my existing setup to get the voice control working (I feel a Shark request coming up to come and make the shiny Columbus sitting on my desk do everything I want it to do)

Its easy to DIY and save yourself some cash.

You need to rewire the mic so the wire goes from the BT module to the mic via the Columbus, rather than direct from BT module to the mic. It'll take you 30 minutes.

I actually think the black surround looks better with the manual aircon, as it helps disguise the fact that there are fewer buttons there, as with the silver surround, there is a lot of silver!

I swapped mine from silver to black recently.

The black piece will come up perfect if you spray it right.

I did:

Plastic Primer

Light Sand

Then built up layers of VW Satin Silver with a light sand inbetween (about 3 coats in total).

The finish is ner perfect.

I personally prefer the Silver surround even with such few buttons to the black.

Thanks Keith. I've got feeling this is what my wife feels like when I'm attempting to explain something technical to her :)

I think what I'm failing to understand is what currently runs from the Bluetooth module to my Stream?

The power and CAN wires. There is no mic. wiring as the stream hasn't the voice control option

Where's the best place to get hold of the microphone wire keith?

The guide mentions I need "2 core 14/.020 shielded cable (DRAKA DE FLRYWBYM 0.5-A+0.5-A is suitable)"
