Part Worn Tyres for my soon to be sold Octi?

Featured Replies

Ive always purchased good quality tyres for my cars, but I am in the quandry of what to do in the near future.

I have a Fabia on order with no firm delivery date as of yet and the Octavia I am currently own, the tyres are becoming very close to the legal limit. I have been given a trade in price for my car, but am relunctant to splash out on brand new tyres if I am only going to be getting a couple of thousand miles of use out of them.

I have heard that part worn tyres come from Scandanavia with about 5 mm of tread on them. Is this correct and are they worth buying?

Or am I just being a cheepskate and sacrafising safety?

I've used part worn tyres in the distant past without incident (when they almost certainly came off scrap UK cars) but the conventional wisdom is that you don't know what thay have been through. I wouldn't like to put them on just before taking the car in, but if you are willing to risk driving around on them for a few weeks/months yourself then I think that's OK.

Have you looked on MyTyres for some cheap new tyres, that might be a option, but I think I'd rather have used Michelin than new cheap Chinese tyres.

If they are 205/60/15 like mine, you can get new decent ones for £50 each, probably not far off part worn if you include fitting.

Why don't you ask the dealer where you are buying the new car from? They are often quite helpful, mine gave me a basic Fabia to run around before my new car was hear, as my old car was broken and scraped.

You could maybe do a deal with them

Maybe you could fit Barum (made by Continental) tyres about £40 each?

Barum are a very underrated tyre,I have just bought some Barum 225/45/17 for £75 a corner fitted. National tyres are doing a promotion on Barum and Avon ,Buy one get the second half price,I am sure 15 or 16 inch should be a lot cheaper.

Yes you are a cheapskate but don't worry because so are most Skoda owners or they would buy Audis :) ...but I wouldn't touch second hand tyres (punctured and unsafely repaired ,how do you know?)

Why not go back to the dealer, remind them that you have an agreed trade in value then point out the state of the tyres to make them appreciate that it will need new before they can sell it on.Ask them to put tyres of their choice on now and you will make a small contribution, say £50.Never know,it might work.

I have used 2nd hand tyres on a couple of occasions.

Got a pair of Continentals with 6mm of tread for £65 fitted, and a pair of winter tyres for the snow at the start of this year for £60 fitted.

No problems with either from a specialist used tyre supplier.

Using a specialist supplier means that they have a legal obligation to ensure that the tyres are safe.

Thanks for the advice regarding part worn tyres. I will make some enquiries regarding prices and also may have a chat with my friend Skoda retailer!!

Tyre shopper do Barums cheap....

What size are you actually after?

Reasonable deals can often be found. Or if you look in the right places new tyres might not actually be that expensive. 225/45/17 Barums for £75 does not fit into that category for me though :)
