Quick question about battery

Featured Replies

Hi all

After having a poke around under the bonnet this weekend I noticed two wires connecting to the positive terminal on the battery. One a thick black one that went off to in to the engine bay, the other a thick red one that goes off to the fuse box in the engine bay. Also seems to have some pretty heavy duty (aftermarket) connectors on the battery.

Is this non standard? Is the thick red wire to the fusebox normal? I'm wondering if it's all left over from an ICE install from the previous owner, although there are no signs of anything being fitted or removed inside the vehicle.

Sounds about right, the thick cable going down will be the pos to the starter motor, and the red will be the supply to the fusebox. cheers - Stuart

Yup, sounds normal to me.

Many thanks for the replies guys. I was just foxed as I haven't seen the positive going to the fusebox in other cars (or at least it hasn't been as introsive/obvious). I'm still stumped as to why the battery casing doesn't fit over the battery correctly. There are two dirty great big 'stinger' connectors on the battery and due to the the way the 2 cables are connected to the positive terminal the casing will not slot and lock in correctly.

A picture might help

Sorry, I did take a pic when I spotted it but couldn't get it to my PC to upload until now.

Is this normal?!

Fusebox cover removed for purpose of pic, but as mentioned due to position of positive cables the battery housing will not secure in place. Battery connectors seem full on and quite expensive according to google so I am assuming cables have been altered at some point.

Google Stinger battery connector. You will find within 2 seconds Stinger make aftermarket audio power connectors (amongst other things). So to make the battery cover fit correctly you will need to remove them.

Figured as much. Original terminal connectors have been removed as far as I can tell so looks like i'll have to get Skoda to supply the original ones so it all fits back together correctly.

I assume it is safe enough for me to remove these for an inspection. Negative first?

Yeah neg first.

Just be aware that once you've disconnected and reconnected the battery you'll get 3 warning lights staying on when you turn ignition, ESP, power steering and another i can't recall. Nothing to worry about, you just need to go for quick drive to reset them.

**** myself the first time it happened to me!

Looks like there is more missing? shouldn't there be a box around the battery too?

The battery should have a two piece plastic box + the snap on lid as well.

Also best to ensure the fuse/relay box lid is well secured as water can drip onto it from the bonnet/wing gap.
