More Effective Oil Catch Can?

Featured Replies

Good afternoon, all..

I've not long got hold of a tidy Mk1 Octavia vRS and needless to say, I'll be doing a bit of tweaking to the engine. First things first, I need to fit an oil catch can and replace some 6 year old breather hoses.

Now I've done all the necessary research into what needs to be done and it's all very straight forward. However, unless you go for one of the Stage 3 cans from America, they're cannae expensive and I can't see how the universal ones will work at all. I work in the field of Hydraulics and Pneumatics, and could get hold of some pretty good Oil Removal Filters specially designed to cope with such an application, removing oil vapour where it's not wanted. With my company discount, these are almost worthless. Probably have one lying about our workshop..

This is the item in question. Specially designed to keep out the nasties. 3/4" BSP fittings, this is basically what 19mm is anyway. Probably a clear bowl, so you don't need a visual indicator.

Does anyone who has good experience with fitting OCC's have any reason why this couldn't be used to good effect? I don't like the idea of having an empty can with an inlet one side and outlet the other, without any medium to prevent the turbulent air from carrying plenty more vapour into the system.

Any advice is welcomed. :)

Rgds,

Keith.

I have something very similar but it was too good to start with and the mix of air, water and oily gunk formed a manky emulsion which completely filled the thing up and was a pain to remove. So I then removed the actual filter from inside it and it works a lot better.

That's the idea I have in mind. Whack a purpose made air/oil separator in there and let it do all the dirty work. I can't see how the alloy tanks off eBay can do a proper job of removing all the nasties, unless theres some sort of baffle plate in there that can't be seen.

I know a lot of the owners are running these OCC's, but are these serviceable? It's a lot of money on what may well turn out to be a throw away item once the medium is clogged up.

A lot of the off-the-shelf air compressor filters don't go up to 3/4". As your post above, even yours is only 1/2". What sort of effect would this have on vacuum pressures?

I've had my catch can on for about 20-30k now and it all seems fine. I believe the CCV system works on the pressure in the top of the engine rather than a vacuum anyway.
