Are silver cars harder to see?

Featured Replies

My Octavia is my first silver car and I've noticed a lot more cars pulling out in front of me seemingly not have seen my car, initially I thought it was just coincidence but after three more cars yesterday who appeared to not see my car I'm not so sure now. I'm curious if anyone has noticed anything similar, as my car as is pre-FL it has no LED daytime running lights unlike my motorbikes which are both black but won't run without a dipped headlight on and seem to get noticed most of the time.

I found my bright red car gets cut up/pulled out on a lot more than my silver Fabia did, despite me driving with the headlamps on most of the time. I'm gonna assume it's a coincedence, rather than anything else in my case at least.

I'm a bit relieved someone else is experiencing what I have for the last 2 years since I got my Fabia, thought I was just being a bit paranoid... :wonder:

Can't speak for the octavia -but up yonder -thought ( as a native of that shire ,John) ,that standards of driving were a tad higher .I put the pulling out but to a problem of size ego( My car is bigger than yours,so I'm going to bully you into giving me right of way) . It's like driving through a limited gap .me ,in this land of limited intelligence, I take the middle ,leaving no room for the other car to try to get through . Selfish -yes ,but that way I don't get my driver side /mirror wrecked ,by someone with little experience of narrow road driving .

Umm no.

I had a silver vectra and didnt have much problems then i got my YELLOW vRS and you wouldn not believe how many close ones i have had due to others..even reversing in my drive some nutted stopped about 2 inches from caving the side of me, round about, junctions you name it they seem oblivious to bright YELLOW!!!

I've lost count the number of close encounters I've had

Silver is a bad colour in poor visibility, it blends with the road too well; and in mist or fog you are effectively invisible.

I have a VERY close call with a silver merc years ago; pre-dawn and thick fog; the **** came at me on the wrong side of a country road and showing no lights. I STILL dont know how I missed being killed.

Having said that; I was sat in a huge red MPV, midway down a queue of stationary traffic on a clear day and in an urban area, when a little old lady drove straight out of a side road, across the white line and smacked into the side of me. "OH!! I didnt see you" were her first words. Lolwut!!

I find the options fitted at each corner of the car works wonders in reduced visibility.

99% of the time the colour has little to do with it, it's just down to people not paying attention, i get it daily in the truck when they either don't see you (a huge 44T truck looming down on them!) or have the mentality of: of it's only a ....... - it can be going that quick :o

Oh I am so glad it is not just me.Yellow smart I mean it is bright yellow with the black tridion so it looks like a bumble bee. Do the idiots see me? I am forever coming home steam coming out of my ears, muttering " But it is yellow bright f****** YELLOW!!! How can they not see me?"

just one incident,I stopped 2 inches from the wing of a car that pulled out on me on a roundabout the idiot driver looked around his passenger then carried on as though nothing had happened.GRRRRR (left hand drive Dutch plates). Sometimes it is dangerous living so close to the port.

My neighbour didn't see my silver Schitroen when she parked alongside it and opened her door onto it, leaving a sizeable dent in the front wing.

She didn't see my anthracite Skoda either when she opened her door onto it.

Draw your own conclusions :(

I know what your saying. Used to happen alot in the cupra..

Now i dont see it as much.. only when im attacking around about and they pull just as i appear around the other side hehe

It amazes me how many drivers don't see a bright yellow car with headlights on.

You should have bought a black one, everyone knows they are the best. :giggle::giggle:

Sorry mate -got to disagree - just had it again tonight ,I was half way round island ,Black van man just cut me up ,even though I'd got headlamps on .

Red is the most dangerous colour for a car. It is to do with its frequency in the colour spectrum - go check your old school science books. Of all the times I have not seen a car and started to pull out they have always been red. On the move red just blurrs into the background.

I find them hard to see when it's peeing down or misty etc

Hence why I always put my lights on in these conditions

Not only the best but the fastest too.......... :)

Does anyone remember Sir Alex bleating about the grey/silver Man U away kit after going 3-0 down, against Southampton I believe? They changed at half time because he said the players couldn't see each other to pass to. Well, they couldn't pass to each other but maybe not for the reasons he suggested – they lost 3-1.

Oh how we laughed

I haven't had this problem driving the octy it's silver too..What i find is drivers who try to intimidate by driving right up my rear and think it's going to make me go faster, had some guy come blasting it up my rear end Thursday in a renault megane, gave him one look in the rear view mirror and then he slowly backed off.Never had that problem when i had the impreza which was also silver, maybe it's a skoda thing..
