Oil on the engine

Featured Replies

Hi,

When I look under the hood it's quite an oily mess.

Does anybody have any idea what can be the cause of this ?

I'm not able to find out where it's coming from.

Have you removed the engine cover completely?

Mine was leaking from the crank case vent pipe

I think i have the same problem and thats where im hoping the oil im using is spilling onto....as it doesnt seem to be going anywhere else!

You mean from the y-shaped pipe ? That's clean and not leaking.

Somewhere down-below the other hose does have grease on it.

It's dark and raining now. I'll take another look tomorrow.

Put some brake-cleaner on the lower hose and hosed it down. See what happens

if I run the engine again.

different engine how can you compare lol

it will be a lower breather pipe from cracnk case

remove that metal bit held on by 2 allen keys 5.5mm

then you can have a look underneath you will prob find your down on power aswell and possible if you do a fault code scan have a 17705 fault on there

have fun

I'm not sure what metal bit you're talking about but I'll try to find out.

Fortunately I didn't experience power problems and no 17705 faults

(however it is having faults 16684 + 16688, cylinder 4 misfire. So it is running on 3,5 cylinders (the 4th is doing something and occassionaly it's running

smoothly on 4 for a few strokes)

I've ordered a Beru ZSE043 to replace the coil to probably fix that problem)

thnx

This plate:

Check the pipes underneath it.

Be careful of the oil filler neck as it's easy to break if you're a bit rough removing the plate.

Oil in that area can also be from the dipstick tube if you don't replace the dipstick properly, and from messy oil changes (if you drip it all over the plastic cover at the front when you're topping it up).

I'll be taking that metal plate off over the weekend to check my Vac hoses as I noticed I had a 17544 code the other day :(

Mine looks like that tbh.

I think its just mung that collects around that area, also I'm not the most steady handed out there when filling the oil :giggle:

As others have said, it'll be the vacuum hose linked to the breather system that is leaking probably (the s-shape one under the inlet manifold). Mine used to be constantly oily under the inlet manifold until I changed all the hoses and cleaned it out. It's been dry and spotless for months now.

It's pretty handy having the breather system externally clean, so you can quickly spot a leak in the future!

I have changed the S pipe a while back so maybe mine left over mung

Mine looks a bit like that too, I found the 'S' shape hose has a big split in it. I have ordered a new one and will be collecting and replacing on Saturday :)

I'm hoping this solves my hesitation issue too!! Well I can hope can't I lol

Let us know how you get on Nick, I'll probably be replacing the same hose on mine I think, got a code but not checked the hose yet for splits. I don't get any hesitation but then mines not remapped.

Will do mate, the part was only about £13 somthing + VAT from my local Audi dealer (part no. 06A 103 221 BK). I will post up a photo of the split one once I have changed it

That may well be it. (some mechanic being careless)

Today the new coil went in. Ran like a train again. No misfires anymore (checked it) ("I love it when a plan comes together")

I removed the metal piece to get a look underneath the intake manifold. Looked quite greasy.

Also underneath the metal plate with a lot of little tubes and connections it was rather greasy.

Cleaned everything as good as possible.

Took the car for a spin in the neighbourhood, took it to 120km/u on the highway and put the pedal to the metal a few times

to be sure it got the pressure up and the oil going.

I was expecting to see an area with oil.

I didn't. So I guess for the time being there's nothing to be done. Time will tell if it was a leftover of careless oil filling

or if the oil comes back after some longer runs on the highway.

Thanks guys for sharing your thoughts and tips !

oh. Here's a picture of my metal bit. It had got a plastic tube attached to it. I removed this first to be able to access the allen

bolts properly. (The piece on the right belongs to the LPG system.)

The plastic tube is from the SAI system. Mine is on the shelf in the garage which is why it isn't in the pic I posted :)

i had the same tube that was split under that plate, had 2 splits in it, one short and the other was about 2 inches long :0)
