My "new" MX5

Featured Replies

Cheers for that. Will have a read.

Today i have been using Dynax S50 in the sills and Dynax UB on the underside of the vehicle. Have to say i was very impressed with the UB. I cant see me having much of a rust problem during my ownership of the vehicle. Did the same with my old MK2 that my dad now owns and it is still in excellent condition underneath.

Also fitted white side reflectors and a grille. Waiting for my white side repeaters as they are out of stock at the mo.

Want to get a sticky front number plate from somewhere too.

sounds like your aiming to do a good job. They were pretty well protected from the factory but my UK car is showing some flaking on the exposed bits after 15 years so the Dynax on yours should do it good.

White reflectors and repeaters should look good against the dark colour so you'll have to get some pics up when completed (although I'm personally not keen on the sticky plates personally - JDM style on the side look better but I've kept the standard plinth).

I was after a new head unit for my MX5. Didn't want to spend a lot of cash. It doesn't have to be the best sound quality - at the end of the day i am in a 15 yr old convertable that is quite noisy anyway.

Wanted something that played MP3's and possibly had an input for my iPhone.

I have just ordered one of these :-

For the princely sum of £39.99.

Gotta be a bargain surely?

I have got the 2.0litre sports model hard top fantastic car but I need to get it lowered it looks like a 4 x 4.Your car looks really clean for its age.

Thats not suprising.. the UK/euro mk3 had its suspension raised to get better pedestrian safety scores.

Give these guys a call... your car will be 1000% better afterwards!

That looks quite good.. let me know how you get on!. ive got an old JVC cd player in mine at the moment.. it even skips when going over bumps emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

You will also get *much* better sound quality by replacing the speakers in the doors.. even with cheap ones. if yours is the S-Special, itll probably have the uprated pioneer sound system anyway.. the headrest speakers will be fine, but i found the woofers in the doors were falling apart.... i replaced them with some old 6.5"s i had lying around and installed new crossovers and the sound is much better.

I've got the original Clarion CRX 87RM in mine with a CD changer but the display is a bit dodgy - it gets confused over which CD it's playing :giggle: . Sounds better having dumped the original paper cone speakers with Sony 16.5cm dual driver polymer units though!

I think i have found my first problem :-(

Only had my latest 5 just over a week and i have noticed a small pool of coolant under the vehicle a couple of times. It is definatley coolant it is sort of greenish blue and smells of coolant. lol

I am not quite sure where it is coming from but the rear of the crank pulley is wet and then it is dripping down to the undertray and out onto my garage floor.

Does this sound like it could be the water pump? I cant find any hoses that are leaking or split anywhere.

The only thing is that it has only done this a couple of times. It was in my garage all day yesterday and i checked it late on last night and everything was bone dry.

Checked it again tonight (car been in my garage all day) and it was ok. However when i pulled the car out of the garage, stopped the engine then checked it again there was water dripping from the bottom/rear of the crank pulley.

Is it possible that this could be the water pump? Is it possible that it may only leak when the pump is stopped in a certain position?

The dealer i bought it from is at the other side of the country form me and has asked me to take it somewhere local and if they verify what the fault is, he will then cover the cost for me. I have previously bought another mx5 from him and am certain he will sort it our but i am a little baffled as to why it would only leak sometimes?

Any advice would be much appreciated, even just to put my mind at rest :-)

Thanks

Yep.. more than likely the water pump, or the gasket its a cambelt off job to fix... common prob

Double check the thin pipes around and below the thermostat housing too, the metal pipes can corrode and leak.

I'd agree with the above from what you've described - it's exactly the right location for a water pump leak... has it had a cambelt change or similar recently that could have disturbed it?

Yes. It had a cambelt change before i bought it. I don't think they did the water pump at the same time so now i guess it will cost them again. The place i got it from have been really good so far. It is booked in at a local garage for Tuesday. Once they determine that it is the water pump they are going to call the people i bought it from, who have assured me they will take care of it for me. Fingers crossed they will be good to their word, and warranty. lol.

I have noticed today that the water pump pulley seems to have a bit of free play in it also.

Car is in the garage on Tuesday for them to check out the water pump. Meanwhile today i fitted my cheapo head unit :-

My link

It seems ok to me, for £45 delivered i can't complain too much.

However, when i copy my music to a SD card then try to play it, all of the music is there but the folders dont seem in the right order.

The manual is very vague about the MP3 playback from SD card. It all works but it is not very clear which folder i am playing from.

Is there a certain structure that i should be adhering to when putting MP3 tracks on a SD Card in folders?

Cheers
