Bought a linksys wag54g for home and it works a treat even works in the car nearly 4 doors down!! so i bought another one for use at swmbo's house seeing as her niece has BB and a poxy usb modem and i couldn't use t'internet with the laptop at her place. thing is i am having a bit of a nightmare with the wireless at her place, modem side of the thing works perfectly but the wireless keeps dropping the connection and sometimes can't get it back for hours, do i have a dodgy unit or could it be down to the build of the house(pre-fab), but i also get problems when i am in the same room as the gateway!?!

any help guys??

Have you tried using a different wireless radio channel?. Normally set to 6 as default. Just a thought.

Assume you have the Linksys wap54g...

Have you got the lastest firmware on both access points?

Have you setup security on both access points?

it was set o 11 as standard and found 6 to give the best results here

and no, its a wag54g

not linking the two together(linksys's), they are about 2miles apart. haven't touched firmware as the original one works perfectly, they are the same model fom the same store bought 1 day apart and security is setup on the 1st one but not the second, the security is obly there to restrict access to computers without authorization and nothing else

its this one btw

only just noticed its bloody 30 nicker cheaper over t'internet, bugger it thats 60 quid down the drain

The only thing I can think of, and I don't generally work with wireless so I could be talking nonsense here, is that if you are trying to use your laptop with the same IP address etc at both locations you need to check the gateways (either computer or router) share the same IP. Also you may need to set up the security on both systems to be identical - even down to the encryption keys you have used.

Also there is a chance of a conflict if there is another wireless network in range of the second installtion.

I realise that you are not trying to connect the two routers!

You should set security up on the second router as every chav in your area could be using your free internet service.

Are both the routers using the same range of ip addresses (iirc Linksys use 192.168.1.1 for the router and 192.168.1.100> for clients. It may be that your laptop is trying to grab a network address which is already allocated.

I've been having similar problems are getting pretty fed up with it!

mine always connects ok on all three connections -

1 cable

laptop

and sons pc

but the two wireless connections come and go and quite often only reconnect if the router is turned off and on again

so i know how you feel

Had a simillar problem with our simillar model linksys router, in the end it was down to a later firmware revision which reduced the output level from the wireless antenna's. In the end I downloaded a hacked firmware which allowed me to customise the output levels, stuck it on max and my problems went away. The range is even better than before now.

sat by the router it was all good with perfect connection and 54Mb connection, as soon as i went down stairs it dropped to 4 out of 5 and 1 Mb then lost it completely. when i came back upstairs i still couldn't connect even after restarting the computer a couple times, then i reset the router and it all worked again. any idea where i can get updated firmware from from??

i don't think its a security issue as that should only affect who couldn't connect rather than who could connect and i don't think its down to settings on my laptop as it works perfectly at home and mine is the only computer here connecting(i have checked on the router who is connected) so no ip conflicts.

the only thing i could put it down to was either the router itself or the fact that swmbo's house is a prefab so has steel's running through the external walls

www.linksys.com for the lastest official firmware don't know where or if unofficial firmware is available

now i am confused, looking at the firmware upgrades but i don't know if i need the annex A or annex B version?? how the hell am i going to find this out?

Go into your router config via the web browser interface http://192.168.1.1 somewhere on the main screen it should state which version of firmware you have.

You may already have the lastest / current version

I have been unable to find a hacked firmware for that router. The only ones I could find were, wap54g, wrt54g and wrt54gs. These can be downloaded from www.linksysinfo.org

the versions on the linksys website are newer than the one on my gateway but i don't know if i need annex A or annex B

Where are you looking on the linksys website because I cannot find reference to wag54g

OK you need to find out which version of the router you have WAG54G (annex A) or WAG54G-E1 (annex B) don't use the wrong firmware version.

if you look at my posts dave that is the exact problem i am having (which version) and i can't bloody find it, i have been looking at my router(physically and through software) for ages and i can't find it anywhere. is there anyway of telling by what connection you have? the E1 is for adsl over isdn and i don't know if this is how my broadband works, i have bt/wanadoo by the way

I cannot find anyway to identify which version you have :(

night all and thanks for advice/help

are these totally different model numbers, if they are chances are you want the A one. Anything written on the box that might help.

nowt on the box, gonna swap em today to see if it makes any difference

Have been using 54G or ...11 for about 9 months now , the most influential factor is the walls ! We live in a house in N wales with thick walls whereas my daughter has a much larger modern house with plaster board walls and the difference in signal strength and range is like chalk and cheese , using exactly the same modem/router .

What has impressed me is the use of a new wireless card for my laptop using the forthcoming new standard called " pre N " . This has doubled the range at least .

I would love to see a true comparison of the different companies distributing these products , although I have heard that D-Link are good and Buffalo is very good value .I happen to use Belkin ..... largely idiot proof .

what makes me think it might be the router is the fact that you can use it upstairs no probs but you go down stairs it loses the signal, i got no props with this as it could be the house but when you go back upstairs you cannot get a signal for love nor money unless you restart the router. just sounds a bit dodgy
