Paint Peeling Inside Wheel Arches

Featured Replies

Hi All, new user to this site.

A quick question (hope someone can help) - has anyone else had paint peeling off the insides of their wheel arches..? my car just 2 months old and paint is peeling away from the rear bumper. Went to dealer who said its normal and nothing to worry about?

Doesnt sound right to me, thought I would get an opinion here before asking for a respray of the whole rear bumper under warranty

Any pictures?

Definitely not normal, sounds to me like the dealer is hoping you'll go away quietly...

Welcome to Briskoda by the way!

Yes. I rejected a white FL vRS in February because paint was flaking off one of the arches and it had other paint / build defects. It is entirely unacceptable.

Will get pics up on here as soon as i can.

I would have rejected the vehicle if there were any issues when picked up but it was all fine when collected.

Machanically it has had no problems and just had a Columbus retro-fitted which works fine.

Just to be clear the defects are in the wheel arches (rear only at present...) and was only noted after a good clean and polish.

After cleaning the arches (plenty of dirt after a recent wet spell) I noted an area of grey - on further inspection race blue paint was around the region and peeled off when i put my fingers over it.

Thanks for the speedy reply guys.

You can still reject the vehicle as not new (eg damaged repaired) or as of an unsatisfactory quality.

Assuming your car is race blue, the paint peeling off sounds like oil/bad prep so I would guess it's more likely a respray than the factory, but you can never tell.

Cheezemonkai is on the right track here. Just because it's a new car - don't assume that nothing has happened to it during the short life. Out of numerous new cars I've had over the years, I had 3 that had refinished/resprayed areas.

Two were fairly obvious in that the refinished areas showed up under street lamps, so had probably been done at the dealers. The 3rd (Fabia Vrs) was almost imperceptable and I didn't spot it until nearly a year later, so it had probably been done to correct a fault on the production line.

Factory paint finishes don't usually peel off nowadays. The days of Ford Silver Fox are long gone.

Just a final thought - It might pay to pop into ANOTHER franchised dealer and say something like "I was just passing by and wonder what you make of this?"

If the selling dealer knows that your car was damaged and that he (the Dealer) did it, he may well try and work a flanker on you. From his initial comment of "That's usual" - sounds like he may be trying to have you over.

You wouldn't believe some of the stunts that dealers can sometimes pull. If you end up in the situation with the dealer apparently acting dishonestly, I'd take it up with Skoda UK. I presume they take their image seriously.

Hi mate, mine did the same thing on my 2010 model, took it back to dealer and was sent to bodyshop under warranty to be sorted out. No problem with it now, as mentioned try another dealer and say you want it sorting out under warranty.

To add Skoda have records of any repairs done at the factory & probably before a car goes to the dealer. We only found out after our Superb was keyed that it had been sprayed twice, transpired the shell was rejected & repainted at the factory, absolutely perfect job & without someone keying the car to reveal the layers of paint we would have been none the wiser.

It sounds as though something has happened to the car & to reassure you as others have said its more common than many believe

I would consider taking it to a good bodyshop & just ask the obvious questions, should it do this, why is it doing this, is it a repair etc (obviously not the one the dealer uses)

If it transpires its a dealer repair I would insist its redone at a bodyshop of your choice at the dealers expense as obviously you now have no trust in him. The dealer saying its normal sounds a little odd

Sorry but if the dealer is playing the that's normal card then I would be worried about their standards for repair and reject it on principle.

You were sold a new car, and it's obviously not up to the standard one would expect from a new car.

Does sound like a bodged dealer repair and the fact they are pulling one over you suggests they don't really care much. I'd def reject it, who knows what else is wrong with it? If it was ex demo then its another story but if its a factory "fresh" car then its damaged goods. You could ask for a discount on it and use the cash to pay for a repaire else where. Its the sort of thing you'd expect on a used car. :o

I'd still not even take the money, because if it's been badly repaired there will be the potential for a long list of problems a few years down the line.

Paint warranty will potentially give you the not covered because it's been repainted etc should you have any problems.

Rejecting a car is not the most straight forward thing and I would prepare for a fight if you go down this route. I also think the law states that you have to give the dealer opportunity to rectify the issue (may well be wrong with this as have no law training etc). Now you could say the dealer saying you it is normal is fair opportunity for them to rectify it but could still end up in a fight. If lawyers etc. get involved then no ones wins except the lawyers!!!!!!

heh guys took itto another dealer who said the same thing:

paint in in a secondary area and is Ok to leave.

this dealer had a very good rep looking through here

as both dealers are saying something not sure what to do next, would really like it resprayed - so will pop into own dealer and ask for that and see what they say.

will put picks on tomorrow

It is supposed to be a brand new car.

Brand new cars do not have peeling paint.

You have either been sold a repaired car or one that isn't up to scratch.

IMHO your best bet is to go to a professional body shop and pay them a few quid to take a look, do some paint thickness readings and put it in a simple one page report for you.

I've never heard of flaking paint being acceptable (without a large discount) even on a used car, never mind a brand new one.

As for only the lawyers winning, you won't be saying that if in 18 months time there are electrical issues and rust due to water ingress and skoda are saying paint readings say the car has had a respray so not covered.

Peeling paint is something which a paint expert could diagnose. Might cost upfront, but the dealer can be charged. That is what I had to organise when an insurance "approved" bodyshop job started to peel off, some time after the bodge. The cause? Respray incompatible with the factory finish. Result complete respray, using the factory VW product or of the same ilk. No further problems.
