Advice please new turbo fitted today

Featured Replies

Hello

Had new turbo fitted under 'stealership' used car warranty just today. It is a TDI and the wife drives it...she has noticed a marked improvement. By the way the car has a custom remap by AWESOME GTI.

So:

[1] Do she need to take it easy with the car?

[2] If the answer to question [1] is 'Yes' then for how long?

[3] Any other advice?

Thanks to all...

Cheers

Aaquil

Whatever the answer, thank your luck stars that the warranty company didn't reject your claim due to the map....

Yes well the stealership never seemed to pick up on it at any of the 'checks' when constant issues came up. Shortly after thecar was bought I was advised that the turbo may be going or it needed to be 'driven a bit' so it was on its way regardless of the remap. They ruddy got their monies out of us anyway...

Anyone?...

If it was me, i would personally drive it steady for maybe the first 500 miles or possibly 1000. just don't rake it. I guess it would just be like breaking in a new engine.

Take it steady. But remember, you do need to cane it everynow and again ( Once you've past 500 or 1000 miles) to make sure the veins dont get sticky

As with all turbos, new or old, I'd recommend letting the engine warm up for a minute or so before driving to let the oil circulate and letting it cool down for a minute or two afterwards to avoid coking up the bearings.

If it's a TDI then it's possible the turbo was replaced because it was suffering from the sticky vanes problem. The dealer saying it needs to be "driven a bit" sounds very familiar! The problem is caused by lots of short journeys and driving the car too delicately, so once you've had the turbo on there a few months, give it a good long run once or twice a month and give it some stick to avoid the problem occuring again.

That said, the sticky vanes problem can be resolved by taking the turbo off and cleaning it (about £250 labour IIRC), so it sounds like the dealer were lazy and decided to just replace the whole turbo

Dealers only swap bits, they can't think for themselves.... thus in a dealers mind:

"clean" = replace part

Which obviously if the job is being done under warranty is a good thing

The dealers aren't allowed to think for themselves, Skoda stipulate that fault A means change Part B that's it!

Thank you for all the replies the wifey tends to drive like 'driving Miss Daisy' anyway unless someone is trying to take the p*ss the she gives it some stick and is really impressed with the acceleration (unawares of the remap!)...I will tell her one day!!! I will give it a while then see...

I would also be careful not to drive like miss daisy on a turbo car all the time, as mentioned you do need to spool up the turbo on revs to help the bedding i process.
