New VRS owner - Split crankcase breather pipe

Featured Replies

Hi all

I have my first Octavia VRS 03 plate for about a month now and love it, but this morning on way to work my car went into limp mode with a flashing engine management light!!!!!! Also terrible fuel consumption!

Had this sort of thing with other cars I had owned so was guessing at one of the oxygen sensors MAP/MAF ????

At lunch I took the engine cover off and spotted that the crank case breather pipe (found that out on tinterweb not a mechanic) had a very large split in. Held it together and got my mate rev and it seemed to be better, so got on to Skoda and have one coming in the morning.

Only thing that is worrying me is that if it is only a breather hose, sp why did it effect the performance so much, is it just a pressure issue or could this split that has probably been there for ages had any knock on effects? perhaps blocked or damaged sensors or something?

I am hoping that at the weekend when I fit the new pipe and reset the ecu (fault codes) by disconnecting the battery everything will be fine.

If anything above is wrong or you think I should expect other problems please let me know soon as.

Thanks for all your help, I want my power back

Dan

Normally the crankcase ventilation system draws the vapours out of the crankcase and mixes them with metered air from the intake system (after the MAF) then puts this into the inlet manifold to be burnt up by the engine. So if there's a split in the pipes the engine is potentially sucking in unmetered air from the engine bay.

I guess if the lambda sensors were telling the ECU the engine was running lean it would have tried to compensate by squirting more fuel in, explaining why your fuel economy has gone tits up

I had the same on mine about 12 months ago. It didnt make any difference to power fuel consumption etc all i got was the oily smell inside the car. I got a new pipe from a local seat dealer at about 25 rubs. My pipe had completely turned to mush. No engine fault light so hope you rectify the problem with a new one.
