Sky HD Problem

Featured Replies

Hi guys, don't know if anyone else has had this.

Basically, every other input on the TV is fine (so it's not the screen) but on Sky (with a 120gb HD box) there is a really annoying flashing line (looks like pixels are going crazy) on the top left hand corner of the screen.

I've tried a different HDMI lead, the signal is more than enough (1 - 89%, 2 - 88%), I even tried a different HDMI socket on the TV.

Is this a normal problem or do I have to ring up the "helpdesk"?

Oh, and the problem isn't there on the AV output to the bedroom TV.

What make and model box? (from the label underneath)

AV output? Do you mean the RF output or SCART?

Sounds like a box problem.

You can call the helpdesk, but they'll just take you through a reboot. You can pay £65 to get an engineer to come and fix it, fixed cost for whatever they have to do.

is this a HD channel, or SD channel. Is the TV picture setting, on auto, 1080i, 720P or another setting.

When watching a SD channel with the picture set to 1080i, you may get strange dots along the top of the screen. This is not usually present when set to auto since the TV switches to a non HD resolution watching SD channels. Its more noticable because on a HD setting (1080i etc) most TVs have no overscan, as thats bad for HD whereas SD requires around 5% overscan to remove the dots. Switching to Auto solves this problem, but you get a small delay when switching between SD/HD channels.

Sounds like you have covered most of the basesemoticon-0148-yes.gif . Have you tried a separate source of HDMI goodness, such as a BluRay? This would finally eliminate the Telly as having a fault with it’s ‘post input switching’ HDMIs. I would check by putting the new source directly onto the HDMI and port you normally use for watching SKY stuff.

If that source is good then it looks like the fault is most likely with your HD box. I don’t have any pixel problems, so if my HD box is typical, you have a ‘fault’, not a ‘feature’…………probably.

I run it at 720p as that's the best the TV will do (it does 1080i, but I'm not convinced on a 32"). It seems to be on all channels, but not all of the time! It's become quite sporadic, and only seems to occur during prime time (Evenings, Sat 8-11, etc).

As for other HD sources, both the 360 and PS3 run fine with no funky disco line.

I've had a thought though....

As we live in flats and I know of at least 3 other flats (in the block of ten) with Sky, coupled with the fact that it only happens during prime time, I'm wondering if there's some sort of feed strength issue between the flats...

You could try and watch a pre-recorded item off your SKY HDD (one recorded at a none prime time) and see if that is an issue.

You're barking up the wrong tree there.

I repair SKY HD boxes.

There's a strong possibility it's the box, depending on the make and model.

If you care to answer my question above, I may well be able to point you towards the right tree. :giggle:

Info off the bottom

Amstrad DRX890-C

what mannyo said is correct, its an Overscan (or lack of) issue.

Amstrad are the old ones arent they?

Just cancelled Sky. I thought they were getting their revenge with the pixel dropouts.

The Amstrad boxes are pretty much unrepairable, unless it's a power supply issue which can be resolved with generic components. Unlikely here.

I'd be making the threat to cancel call to Sky, in the hope they want to keep one of their 'premium' customers.

Its just your TV doesnt have enough Overscan, seriously. does it do it on the TV Guide screen?

Nope, doesn't do it on the guide.

And I don't think I'd need to threaten to leave as I haven't had it twelve months so it should come under warranty.

It could be the timing marks for the ad breaks sometimes I see them too,and then the ads start, just my two pennies worth
