Just had a 70mph blow out. Not happy

Featured Replies

Today along the A14 at 70mph I managed to hit what looked like a brick or something similar. The car infront swerved as something rolled along the road but I did not have time and hit it with a loud bang causing the tyre to explode. I somehow managed to keep the car from hitting the centre reservation and soon as it was safe I quickly pulled over on the verge. The thing is the tyre had only done 100miles as they were brand new last weekend. When I took off the wheel there is a minor dent on the inside of the wheel so I am assuming it will be a new alloy as well?? Any rough prices on a new alloy? When I put the spare wheel on I noticed the car really pulls to the left now. Im hoping its tracking and that I have not bent or damaged anything else!! Not a happy bunny really but it could of been worse.

If it was driving straight before hitting the brick, then either something is now broken or bent. The only reason the tracking would go out is if something has been damaged, the adjustment nuts dont just move themselves.

The alloy maybe fixable depending how bad the dent is, obviously a new tyre is needed.

Well the car has always pulled to the left like most fabias seem to suffer with but I might of been feeling paranoid after the accident and it might of always been like that. Im hoping its just me being paranoid. The wheel is slightly bent and I will get a pic up showing the damage. Found a new alloy for 160 delivered so looking at 260 to fix it if nothing else is broken.

Firstly glad your safe and didn't come to any harm. The car can always be fixed or replaced.

With regards to the damage you will definately need re-alignment. I would suspect you may have bent a track rod. Depending on severity you may hear a knocking noise if you put the car on full lock and drive.

I would get it checked over just for peace of mind. Last thing you want is something happening at 70mph again

Your lucky nothing worse happened!! Bet you $4!t yourself though! :o

My girl friend is off tuesday so she is going to take it to our local garage to have it checked over and get a price to sort the car out!

I would say a new wheel looking at the photos, just an opinion though, as has been said

could have been so much worse an outcome, not happy maybe, but perhaps fortunate given

the circumstances

I think i was fortunate now thinking about it as I had my mum and sis in the car and would hate to think what could of happened. Seen a brand new wheel for 150 with free delivery so gona buy that once the garage has had a look. Its just frustrating as i was about to sell it as i dont use it anymore as i now have a work van and have done approx 2000 miles since december and want something old to play around with ie. mk3 golf gti or similar

before diving into a new wheel, find a good engineer/refurb place and ask their opinion. You never know, might be lucky

i have a worse dent in one of my alloys - took it to an alloy specialist, who took the wheel off, looked at it and told me as long as there doesn't appear to be any air loss it should be ok.

so far haven't had a problem, so you may get lucky!

I'm just glad you're okay mate...

A blowout at 70 is my worst nightmare. :o

You did well to keep the car under control at that speed

Have a look in the for sale section for a single wheel.

They come up from time to time.

in regards to wheels and MOT's, it would only fail if the tyre is being pulled out of shape or deformed in some way by the dent in the wheel... looking at that picture it doesn't seem too bad at all really

Just got a phone call from my local garage to say I need a new wheel, tyre and tracking will sort my problems out. They can not see any other damage with suspension so Im a little happier now. They quoted £255 for new alloy and uniroyal rainsport2 fitted but will have to go else where to have the tracking sorted out ie kwik fit or vindis. Any ideas what I should be paying for tracking / wheel alignment? Thanks

Just had mine done recently after bush replacement and then clutch/flywheel change.

Got it done at Elite in Rainham Essex and it came in at about £38 all in. Although the car felt okay,

it was well out and needed some adjustment.

Recently had to have a new front tyre on my Octavia after hitting partially sunken rock on side of road. Local tyre place did a new tyre fitted and balanced and the tracking sorted for £105 so you shouldn't have to pay much more than that.

Now i have the car back i am not sure whether to pay for the tracking as the car still drives the same as before ie pulling to the left like most vags. Drove it on the right hand side on the car tracked dead straight so i am abit worried paying out to have the tracking done if nothing is going to change to the drive of the car. Garage quoted £30 on thier new Geometry then £30 per adjustment which could be very expensive. Vindis quoted £195 to have the tracking done which is a joke surely?
