How much black smoke from Fabia vRS ?

Featured Replies

Hi all

The missus has got an 06 (BLT) Fabia vRS which she has owned for about 5 weeks.

Its unmodified, had one lady owner from new, done 46K and got a full Skoda service history.

It starts and runs fine, does not appear to be using any oil and is one of the quickest std vRS's we have driven, and we can get it to read over 70mpg on the trip computer if its driven gentle.

But.....on start up, hot or cold it always seems to have a faint trace of black smoke from the exhaust, its defo black (not blue) it never lasts long, but it always does it ???

I've used genuine VAG parts and changed the air filter, fuel filter, oil and filter, cleaned the EGR and anti shudder, fitted a 9mm EGR gasket but its made no difference.

I did hope that when I changed the cam belt etc and I re-timed the crank and cam shaft that it may have stopped it, but no luck.

Please can you guys confirm if this black smoke on start up is normal or not ????

Cheers

Bill.

Normal, as is grey smoke which is the more common one. The system pumps in more fuel at start, and you have the glow plugs working as well. This effects combustion, and some of the fuel doesn't burn, hence the smoke.

As above. Its a diesel, i`v yet to seem one that doesnt emit any smoke at all.

If it's had an easy life, it could well do with a good hard thrashing to clear the pipes.

As others have said, it's a diesel, they smoke. Maybe try running some Millers EcoMax through it

If the glowplug light is going off almost immediately, then I would say it is normal. If it stays lit for a few seconds or longer, then it could be a faulty temp sensor.

Thanks guys

Sounds like its normal then for a PD engine to black smoke a little bit on start up.

As you may have already guessed this is the first diesle engined car we have owned and I was slightly concerned about the smoke compared to the Euro 5 DAF trucks I work on (I'm an HGV fitter), which dont appear to smoke at all.

PS: these Fabia vRS's are great little cars, we both love it...... the only problem is I cant keep my wife out of it, she's acting like a teenager who has just past her test, any excuss at all and she's off for a ride out in it !

Cheers

Indeed it is. They smoke like a chimney on full chat with a hybrid turbo and decat exhaust :giggle: so I'm told :o

Startup smoke is normal for a diseasel. Everything from small generators to truck and ship engines do it.

Have you noticed any smoke when driving, either on or off boost?

Hi Jim

Most of the time when your driving during the day there does'nt seem to be any smoke, but I have noticed at night time if you have a car following with its lights on and you boot it there is defo something coming out of the exhaust, cos you can see a sort of haze in the lights.
