Has anyone any views on Fixed or variable service intervals/?

My 170 DSG Elegance has done 26,000 mile since Oct 09. I have had two fixed mileage services at 9 and 18, 000 miles. The next service is due in 1-2,000 miles. It has been suggested that I switch to a variable mileage service at the next service. Much of my miles are motorway/ long distance with a small proportion of local short trips. What is your experience of the variable system- should I change or what???

Oil is still the cheapest mechanic in my opinion. I have my Superb on fixed servicing and even though I have still got a couple of thousand miles to go I will be happy to have a lube service since my journeys are mostly quite short.

I got free servicing for three years thrown in presumed everyone did, they service it every 10,000 miles and then at 30k it will go onto the variable schedule

My 2010 Reg Superb 1.9 Computer says 28,000km or 2 years!

Out of the factory the service countdown will be configured for variable servicing; certainly my previous Audi and VW were. I got upto 24,000 miles before my first service in a 2003 Passat TDI.

Obviously there is nothing stopping you booking it in for a service at 10,000 to 12,000 miles at which point the countdown can be reconfigured for fixed service intervals. There was a time when the lubricants were different for each servicing regime, I believe they now use the long-life oil for both. It is really personal preference and they type of driving the car is subjected to.

the service interval on the Superb is set up for variable service intervals from the factory so you shouldn't worry about what appear to be long intervals......the car is designed for it albeit there is nothing to stop you from having it serviced every 12 months if that is your preference.

Motorway miles do the variable

Taxi urban, do a 10k schedule.

Even better do a Supurbia schedule....

10k oil and filter, and pollen filter

20k oil and filter, fuel, air and pollen filters, plus inj cleaner in 1/2 of a tank.

All this 40k fuel filter, 40k air filter is fleet pleasing, but if you want her running right, and you will pick the over 60k repair bill up, follow my guide.

I have always used variable, never had a problem. My superb with 26K on it will be going in for its second variable service in one weeks time. The first one was completed ahead of time when I purchased the car, at my request when on 12K miles. During the week I only do short runs, but I do one big drive at the start of the week and another on Friday. My total weekly mileage is about 300 at the moment.
