Going back to a Fabia Vrs

Featured Replies

Thought I'd get some opinions here,,,,

Traded my fabia vrs in for the octy pd vrs (56) a year ago now believing it was a much better car A recent change in my job means I now travel a good 500 miles every week, and the crappy fuel consumption has made me think that I wouldve been better off keeping the Fabia, even started looking around for another Fab.

Anyone else in the same situation ? Fab better on fuel, cheaper to tax and insure. And in my opinion , a faster car as well.

What would you do ? Keep the octy, which is a cracking car, just costs that much more to run than a fabia I cant really justify the difference

Thoughts ???

Your Octavia should not be that much different to your Fabia on fuel and the road tax isn’t that significant, I have had two Fabia vrs’s and recently changed to an Octavia PD 140 although I would still love another Fabia (My last one was stolen). Must be silver mind and good low mileage ones are hard to find these days, also I might miss the enormous Octavia boot.

I've found my PD140 Octy is more economical than any of my 3 Fabia vRSes.

What sort of MPG are you getting out of the Octy? I know you have the PD170, but there shouldn't be too much difference when all said and done.

Steve

The 170 PD is a poor on fuel with normal driving giving only 45mpg and then 50mpg on a run but can get less than these if have a heavier right foot.

45 mpg seems OK to me. What does a 140 do if driven hard?

45 mpg is excellent for a big fast family car, I would have been very happy with that from my Fabia, are you sure there isn't something else bothering you?

had both of the cars ,,, on the same journey ,, the octy struggles to get to 50mpg and the fab easily gets to 55 sometimes a lot more

Steve ,, for a diesel the 170 is shocking on fuel, if you drive like you should you wont get anywhere near 45mpg , thats a long way from easy 55mpg in the fabia

I easily get 45-50 mpg from mine, which I am happy with.

It maybe worth exploring an 'economy focussed' remap if you want a bit more?. Cheaper than changing cars...

45 is plenty reasonable for a decent sized car on low pro tyres

I had a mondeo mk3 estate on 18's and it did about 45 on a long run taking it easy and around 40 rouond town

Its only really smaller diesel cars that get a significantly better MPG

I know where you are coming from when you say a change of job impacts on the cost of your car usage! I sold on my last diesel as my job at the time meant I wasn't covering many miles & bought my vRS as with not having to do may work miles, I could justify a slightly less economic car (plus I needed more space!!!)!

A few weeks later I got a new job and all of a sudden my mileage went through the roof! I was only getting about 33mpg out of the Octy and I'd been used to nearly 50 in my diesel. I had the same thoughts as you, but then I sat down and did some "whole life cost", ie what i'd loose on selling the Octy, what I'd have to pay to get another car, tax/insurance/servicing for each etc. By the time i'd worked all that out, it wasn't financially worth changing , as it would have still cost me more over 3-5 years than keeping the Octy!!

I'm now glad I stuck with it, the mileage eventually dropped to below average and the driving pleasure is still there! My Octy is still the best family car i've had, it's been reliable and has swallowed work & holiday kit like an estate, but compared to the Fabia vRS, it's not a winner in the traffic light to traffic light dash! After all there is no getting away from it's size & weight. Where it does win however is when we are out and about as a family, more room = less stress & they don't seem to notice or complain as much when i'm "pushing on"!

You will certainly notice a difference & it sounds like that is as big an element as the mileage issue!

45 mpg seems OK to me. What does a 140 do if driven hard?

my pd140 when driven hard returns around 27-30mpg but that is with the caravan on the back too :giggle: . I've noticed my pd140 is about 5mpg less economical than my previous pd130 octavia so would guess that the fabia vrs driven sensibly could achieve better mpg than the PD140/PD170.

Be wary when looking just at fuel costs for changing cars, you also need to take into consideration the depreciation and the new purchase costs and how many years you will need to keep your new car for before you are any better off, just as Uncle Bulgaria has mentioned, you might be supprised by the result.
