To cat or not to cat

Featured Replies

Hi all was just wondering if it is possible to remove the cat from my octy rs and still have it pass the emisions test at it's impending first mot?

I had heard that it will pass as long as the air con is switched off. Is this true, anyway any and all help will be greatfully recieved

Patients is a virtue, leave it on just till after the test...

You won't pass an MOT wothout a CAT, as the examiner will physically look for the beast when he's underneath the car. Also, the CEL on the dash I've heard is a failure in itself!!

What you could do though, if you want to have a free flowing system, and still be legal, is go for a 100 cell race cat like I've got...

True, true. but I was thinking if possible of a more permanent solution i.e removing the cat and not having to re-fit anually for the test ;) But only if it is possible

Cel ??

The cat must be fitted to pass an mot..... what cell it is though depends on you, i personnally run a race 100cell cat...The air con being switched off puts less load on the engine.

The "cel" engine check light in itself is not a mot fail;)

Ask DaveU he runs a decat........by the way Dave whens your mot due:confused: ;)

Thanks so far chaps, I have a very mechanicaly skilled mate with his own tuning buisness.(he got 210bhp from a diesel bora  ) He has offered to open the cat, remove the gubbins and weld it back together, along with other mods. sounds a bit of a bodge i s'pose, but he has done it to others with great success, just dont know how they fared at mot time!

A car can pass an mot if it looks like a cat is present - so if your mate was to gut all the internals from your cat and the emissions were low enough it would pass but only because it "looks" like a cat is there. Testers are not allow to dismantle stuff on the test and therefore cannot tell whats inside your cat.

I've heard some people say as you do, others say not so... don't know what to believe, so I err'd on the side of caution ;) Personally, haven't got a clue myself whether it will pass or not with a cel!!

What I will say about the 100 cell cat though, is you can practically see through it when you're holding it in your hand, so although it's going to be a restriction compared to a straight piece of pipe, what I've also heard about other petrol users about the 100 cell is that, on some cars anyway, you really do have to make sure the cat is up to temperature before doing an emissions test, as otherwise the figures have been a close call.

Up to you if you want to de-cat at the end of the day. My decision was to go for a 100 cell so I didn't have the hassle of haing to re-fit it at MOT time, risk having the car impounded at a roadside inspection (seen it done, and there's quite a few inspections down here!), but still have a free flowing system...

MOT was due in November but car is currently SORN and in lots of pieces waiting for these damn pistons from the States!!

ok right by law a car doesnt have to have a cat to pass its mot at all if the emmision levels are below what it should be then its fine but if not it fails.

cars from 91 or what ever it was only had to be made with cats on they dont have to keep them on to be legal
