self healing themostat?

Featured Replies

right folks had issues a few months ago where i was getting dtc 17705 i think which was thermostat, ive got a vag scanner to ease code and eml,i never got round to changing the thermo and left it as it never really bothered me,but now in the last 3 months its been fine,no fault codes, engines up temp after 5 mins,no eml,is it poss thats its fixed it self???

The most likely cause of 17705 is a dirty throttle body - nothing to do with the thermostat.

defo the thermo mate, could be code 17704,but its defo the thermostat.

It could also be the coolant temp sensor, these are a very common failure across the VAG range, mine was showing an intermittent fault on VCDS for months before it actually started to play up (temp gauge not reading correctly).

Did the car actually get up to normal temperature correctly, or overheat? if not then the thermostat was not at fault.

That does sound like the thermostat was stuck open.

If the stat is screwed I don't think it pops a fault code tbh.

Have you had the fault code after changing the sensor?

I can't see how a thermostat can give a fault code - it's basically just a metal restrictor sitting in the coolant. To get a DTC you need some form of sensor/wiring going to the item.

Haha thats what I mean't lol
