Waxing

I am taking delivery of my Superb Elegance 4x4 estate 170 soon. It is Black Magic. Can I AutoGlym HD the paintwork straight away?

Yes.

Then apply a good sealer followed by wax of your choice

Do you mean High Def first and then the sealer?

Edited by philpix

First you use the High Definition Cleanser followed by the High Definition Wax (this is the sealer part). I've used Autoglym products for years (mainly the Shampoo followed by the Silicone Resin polish) and my RS Capri has won many trophies as a result but if you can afford the extra, I'd go for the www.meguiars.co.uk range and use their Three step system, this is a paint cleaner (used after washing the car), Deep Crystal Polish followed by the Carnuba Wax.

All this is no good if you don't wash the car properly (soory porbably teaching Grannie to suck eggs here) so i have a grit guard in my bucket, use lambs wool wash mit and I always use a chamois rather than a drying blade, the slightest grit and you've gouged your paint.

Wow.. serious stuff! Can you come and clean my Superb when I get it????

All good advice but could I suggest a quality microfibre cloth instead of a chamois . They are much better at drying the car without streaks and you wash them afterwards to remove any very fine grit that may have been picked up during drying.

Wax is ALWAYS last!!

I've found that if you use a chamois and rinse it out regularly you remove any small bits of grit from it and it leaves a streak free finish. Then clean the chamois in soapy water when I've finished. With a microfibre cloth, I've found I've had to use more than one on a large car like the Capri and the Superb is even bigger because it gets saturated especially if you have a good finish and all the water has beaded up on the car.

This is just my personal choice based on experience, G.K has found the cloth to be better for him, so neither is wrong as such, like I say personal choice. it also depends on how long you want to keep the car for and how much you want to spend.

Jakeyc; I only polsih the Capri to get it into the concours areas (annoys the concours guys because if there is a track day, the car will be on track after judging so I hold up the prixe givving :D) of a show because I'll never leave it in a public car park, especially as it's been valued by the insurers at about the same as a new Superb Elegance!!! For me to do a car, it would cost you an arm and a leg, I occasionally help a friend who runs a valeting company specialising in detailing the more exotic cars such as Bugattis, Lamborghini's and so on and prices start at £800 for a basic valet, the most he's charged was when it took us 3 days to do a McLaren Mercedes at £3K and the owner thought that was cheap :o

Cheers for the advice. Do I need to use a paint cleaner on the brand new car. Can I not just use the Carnuba Wax?

Apologies

I read the first post wrong

Use AGSRP first

Then a sealer

Then AGHDW

T :o

If you do go down the microfibre route you can get large drying towels which are 24" x 30" and made for the job. They leave a streak free finish and can be put in the washing machine when necessary. I use 'Sonus Der Wunder Drying Towels' available from 'The Ultimate Finish' website and have found them excellent. Like a chamois they work best when wet/damp.

Costco do a large pack of good quality microfibre towels for not a lot of money. They also sell a "special" towel which is supposed to be designed for drying cars but the only "special" bit about it is its size. It is too large and becomes too heavy and impossible to wring out.

I usually wash both my Superb and my wifes Octy one after the other and I use one clean microfibre for each car. Once I have done the bodywork I then dry the wheels and finish with the inside of the doors and below the bonnet etc. then they go into the wash (no softener!!)

My wife uses these same towels for cleaning windows (occasional dusting... he he !!) etc so you soon accumulate a full load for the machine.

Dont use anything abrasive on a brand new car , there is no need for it and dont use a chamois leather , wake up to the 21st century and use a decent drying cloth which wont marr the paintwork (I have BMP myself and it marrs very easily)

I would suggest

wash with decent shampoo and dry

Dodo juice lime prime light - to clean and polish the surface

Dodo juice purple haze or hard candy polish to protect (2 coats)

If its a brand new car a spend a bit of money and get decent kit to keep it nice
