Worth flushing oil through?

Featured Replies

Going to change the oil on my fabia vrs never changed the oil in any of my cars but feeling manly! Just wondering is it worth flushing new oil through to clean it out or not, if so how much oil ? I know there is thread for what oil to use but can any one recommend a good oil?

You can get flush stuff that you put in before you drive to the garage, which is supposed to help get rid of any gunk - I've used it before, but not religiously so can't say how effective it really is...

So long as the correct oil is used and changed close enough to the change interval specified, I would not bother using a flush. Just run the engine before draining it (even better go on a drive or change the oil after getting back from somewhere you'd have gone anyway) when the oil is nice and warm as it will drain better then.

DO NOT USE ENGINE FLUSH.

Not in a PD engine.

Not ever.Never.

Did I say not to use engine flush?

Use oil to 505.01 spec, change every 10k miles or 12 months whichever happens sooner.

You can change it more often,if the voices in your head tell you,but always use 505.01 spec.

And NEVER use engine flush.

Comma do an engine flush range which unlike some others, is based around a synthetic oil base with oil detergents added in a stronger quantity.

This means you're not introducing anything different to do the flush, you're using oil detergents which are normally added to oil anyway, just more of them.

Because it doesn't break down the oil that's already in there, you can actually drive around with it in for a week before your change but you wouldn't want to hammer it in that time as of course the oil / detergent ratio has been changed.

You can alter this to suit your own wishes, add it all, run for 10 minutes and change oil or do what I do and add some a few days before just to get it gently working and put the rest in just before I'm dropping the oil.

I have had positive results with this product, the hydraulic lifters tend to get varnished up on the VR6 over time on the semi synthetic the VR was supposed to run on (VW now recommend fully synth) and this noticeably cleaned them up making them quieter after start.

The other factor with flushes is that you never get it out of you system completely, there's always a bit left in there breaking down your fresh oil. With a detergent based one (and there may be other brands that do it like this), that's not an issue.

Just my thoughts on the matter.

Even though 507.00 is the newer spec? Not arguing, just looking for info before I dictate to my garage what oil to use on the service.

I agree with the above, I wouldnt put any kind of flush into the system as you wil always have residue and this could compromise the properties of the oil, change it more reguarly if you like but I wouldnt put a flush in the system.

And 505.01 is the correct grade of oil for the Fabia as stated above.

The 507.00 is not the same oil. 507.00 is the updated oil for the Long Life serviced cars. The Fabia vRS's are all on fixed interval servicing, every 10,000 mile's. Although I am pretty sure that it is still acceptable to use this oil, as its not of a lower quality (I presume its a higher quality + different additives) but you would still have to change it every 10,000 miles. Would be pointless as it is more expensive than 505.01 grade oil.

I think you will find that VW 505.01 is 5w/40 and VW 507.00 is 5w/30, Also if you change your oil often enough you should not have to flush.

Similar to the Redex thing in another thread, I've had it put in by a dealer (and listed on the invoice), so I reckon I'm indemnified if the worst happens - but then I've never noticed any difference between times it's been used and times it hasn't. Just had 6th annual service (100k) so we'll see.

Better safe than sorry, though, I suppose - modern synthetic oil is very much better than mineral stuff, I suppose...

If you're running a car on fully synthetic, it has a higher proportion of detergents as the synthetic oil is not affected by these. Fully synthetic oils are also less likely to break down due to heat so don't leave the same sorts of deposits meaning overall a car run on fully synthetic that is serviced at specified intervals (the oil would last longer) should never need a flush.

Semi synthetics are generally OK, but note my post above about the VW change from the original semi to fully synth due to varnishing in the VR6.

Even so, with a semi synthetic you should normally be fine. I'd only flush if some sort of blockage or silting was suspected.

I would use engine flush in anycar......... if you want to flush it pass some clean oil through it once you have drined the old stuff out and let it go throught engine and out the sump
