95 or 97/8 RON fuel for VRS

Featured Replies

Hi All

Just had a search through all the topics and cant find much on this subject so wondered what people were using ?

I have a 2010 petrol VRS and usually use BP ultimate 97 fuel, having only once had to use 95 as was no petrol station near.

Wondered what other people were using and if they could tell a real difference in performace or mpg ?

Also got a Shark stage 1 on the way so I am I right in thinking this will benefit too from sticking to higher RON fuel ?

Any advice / opinions welcome

Cheers

Paul

I always use Shell, normally optimax but tried the new fuel save (if it's really new).

Didn't really notice a difference but mine is standard.

i had a 06 tfsi with a Jabbasport custom remap and always ran mine on 99 octane as i found i got much better fuel returns and the car drove a lot better

This is always a tricky question with people on both sides saying it does or does not matter which fuel you use. The TSI engine does not need the high RON fuel but if ou are happy to pay the extra and feel it gives you benefits then stick with it. Personally I used to run my Mk 1 VRS on normal fuel and never had a problem with it. Performance and economy were both spot on in my opinion.

Have a read and make your own decision, the facts speak for themselves though - http://www.thorneymotorsport.co.uk/content/site/downloads/press-release-full-290806.pdf

Higher oct petrol will give you more power, whether you notice or not though is a different matter as the increase in BHP/Torque could be negligible.

In my experience though, I've noticed the difference in cars that are at least remapped.

I really noticed the difference in my old FSi but then the minimum recommended was 98ron. My new TSi engine (minimum 95ron) I can’t tell the difference at the moment.......

Must admit in my MK1 and the TSI I have tried 98/99 ron fuel but have never noticed any difference in performance or economy.

My dyno figures in my sign off strip were using Tesco 95 Ron and I was happy with these I suppose a run with 98Ron would prove conclusive!

I used to only use Tesco 99 till I read that the "super" grade they were talking about on the inside of the fuel flap meant continental super which is 95. I changed to 95 (anybody's) and can't tell any difference in performance or mpg.

I have found that I seem to get a few more MPG with the 99RON stuff.

I'm not claiming that any testing I've done was controlled.

However on average, a full tank of Tesco 99RON will last near enough 400 miles.

Tesco 95RON, it seems to last until around the 370 miles.

This is on my 2007 vRS - standard.

I've an 07 TFSI.

Shell - Doesn't seem to matter 95 or 99.

Tesco - 99 only. Runs like a dog on their 95.

I noticed a drop of about 3mpg as well as the drop in power with Tesco 95. Car feels like it has a fat bloke in the boot.

Awaiting delivery on new VRs Estate Petrol. Apparantly recommended is Roz 98 (minimum 95). The Skoda garage owner claims that he has some clients who are convinced that the 98 gives them a higher top speed (they are able to regulary drive in Germany) with slightly better fuel consumption. Reckon will give it a try at first and then swith to 95 and see if I notice any difference.

Oi! Do you mind :giggle:

During the winter months I run 95 Ron.....

Not done enough driving to work out any mpg differences, but my 06 vRS definitely feels quicker with 98ron in.

Runs perfectly with 95ron, but defo feels slightly sluggish. Might run only on 95 over the winter as mentioned above, when i can't use the acceleration anyway.

Problem is, alot of people who normally use 95ron will fill up with 99ron and expect instant results, however, the ECU will need approx a full tank before adjusting to the higher octane fully. After your second fill up you should feel a difference, albeit only a slight difference - I've always found Tesco99 to just give it that little more of an edge over 95ron.

Plus the Tesco99 has bio-ethnol in it so its better for the environment, plus cleaning additives which helps keep the engine clean.

Never really understood the warning in the petrol cap saying min 95, but then went abroad and they sell 91. Then it made sense. I run V-power and I'm happy with it, but at 7p a litre more it's probably not worth it on pure economy grounds.

'Ere you're due me petrol money!

I said that in a previous thread but was told it is not so - that the ECU adjusts immediately. Can a techie tell us which?

Also I suppose we have to accept that if we are not nearly empty when refilling with a different RON, you are going to initially get a mixture - something like 96.5 !!!

I'm no techie so will wait to be corrected, but I've always been lead to believe this is correct - that's why it's always good to take out the fuse that correlates to the ecu's KAM (Keep Alive Memory - disconnecting the battery also does the trick) - this allows you to teach your ecu a new driving style.

Your point in regards to topping up with 99ron only adds to the 95ron already in the tank, so is not pure 99ron.
