Steam whistle-like noise from under the hood

Featured Replies

After driving a period of time, any period of time (this happened 10 secodns after engine start and 10minutes after engine start) there is a loud screeching or more of a steam whisle (as a mate pointed out) kind of noise coming from under the hood. To solve this problem I tried turning off the engine. After the engine is turned off the noise remains for another 10 seconds or so before droping in pitch and then stopping suddenly. I fire up the engine and continue driving. What could this noise be? Some people said it could be the watercooling but what part? The car just went through an MOT with it and passed :S

Any help is appreciated. Thanks guys!

P.S. I hope this is the right section of the forum to post this, I wanted to post in tech help but it didn't give me an option to.

Engine:

Skoda Fabia Classic 8V

4 Cyl, 1397CC

68BHP

Not modified in any way, low end engine :)

Water pumps (speaking generally not just Skoda) can screech if their bearings are failing but this would stop immediately the engine is turned off...

What car? What type of engine does it have?

Petrol? Diesel? Turbo or n/a?

Fairly important to give us more info to get any useful advice.

For some reason I suspect the engine fan but I'm far from a tech.

One will be along soon no doubt... ;)

Yes - sorry - I suppose you could argue that the electric fan is part of the "watercooling" system and would potentially run on after switching off...

Has the OP actually opened the bonnet and tried to see where the noise is coming from?

The mechanic that did the MOT did not know about the noise and hence why he probably overlooked it.

Well it may not be an MOT failure item anyway. The MOT doesn't cover a complete health check on a car, only the safety related aspects - and latterly emissions...

Have you looked under the bonnet when it's screeching - does it stop when the fan stops?

It happened at the most unpredictable times, in the middle of town and at the lights on a dual carrige way so I couldn't hop out and lift the bonnet. I can't seem to generate the problem by reving it in the drive.

So it's happening on occasions when the engine's hot and the fan kicks in...

How could I test this for sure? Maybe I should switch the engine on and let it run for a bit and see if it happens when the fan kicks in? Also, if it is the fan, do you think I could change the fan myself, is it an easy job?

Good news, it IS the fan that's fubard. Thanks guys! Now, where would I buy a new one from and how easy is it to change it myself?

Skoda dealer?

Should be relatively straightforward assuming access is available.

You might try lubricating it?

Lubricate you say? Which parts would I lubricate and any sugestions on lubricant?

Mine's done this since I bought the car, at some strange intervals, but never thought anything of it really. Owned the car for 9months now and not had any problems with it? (touch wood)

Well a squealing noise suggests a dry bearing - you'd probably have to take it off to examine and put some oil on it but it might be worth it. Any reasonable oil would do - I've used the drops of the end of the dipstick for things at times since it's convenient...

Much thanks, I will look at it tomorrow and see how easy it is to take off etc.
