Isn't overclocking FUN?

Featured Replies

As I am about to upgrade my current PC I'm not so bothered about knackering it up - I built it about 2years ago and it has given stirling service giving a very respectable 12,300 score in 3DMARK 2001SE.

So set about upping the score to.... drum-roll please 16,220

Current spec :Athlon XP running @ 2430Mhz on 180FSB & 13.5 multi with 1.85v core

1Gb Corsair XMS PC3200 (2x512) Asus A7N8X Dual Channel Mobo

256Mb ATI Radeon 9700pro clocked @ 380Mhz GPU & 335Mhz memory

Had a few hiccups on the way - thought I blown it at one stage and had to reset the CMOS - took too big a leap - now step by step upping the load but still only running 40# CPU temp - probably due to the 5  fans...

Still finalising spec for new rig but so far :

Will be AMD 64 CPU(probably winchester core 3200)

Will be ASUS mobo (poss PCie version)

Will be ATi Radeon X800 XT or X800 PE

will have 2Gb PC4000 (2x1gb)

will have SATA Hard drive(s)

and will cost a bloody fortune

Dave, what is the factory speed of your XP chip?

I have one of the golden 1700+ JIUHB DLT3C jobbies :D (currently running at 10x 200MHz bus)

A64s kick butt big time

I'm gonna delve into that area very soon, just like you...

If 3D is your major aim, are you thinking of going SLI (with PCIe and nVidia4 chipset) ? :D

Have not got a clue what factory speed was - long since forgotten I think it was an XP1700 but not sure.

Yes I've been looking at SLi but I hear the Nvidia cards are very noisey - one of the things top of my list is to reduce noise whilst not affecting cooling - so looking to get a case with 120mm fans,I'm too chicken to go down watercooling route although I know it helps for overclocking and noise.

If I don't toast it was thinking of using current gear in a smaller case to use for MP3's and so forth in the bedroom - might try water cooling on that - would not matter if it went pete tong

What are you 2 talking about ................as I don't understand any of that , I will assume it's written in Lebanese .............. :D

Xavier , if I were you I wouldn't delve into anything at the moment ..... ;)

What are you 2 talking about .

It's the subtle art of "remapping" a PC.

Getting the CPU / Graphics card / memory etc to run reliably at a higher speed than they would "normally" ;)

Er - me confused.

I don't personally own anything so esoteric, but I understand 1.7 GHz is quite run of the mill nowadays, and 3.odd is easily obtainable. Therefore why spend a lot of time tinkering with an old CPU (and possibly destroying it) when one can just go and spend quite a small amount of money and upgrade it to something that comfortably runs faster than the overclocked old one, and doesn't need 5 fans to keep it from blowing up? (and presumably quieter, too)

What do you use these beasts for? Is gaming the main aim?

It's their version of a trip to jabba I suppose?

Ah , to be politically correct you should have said " It's their version of a remap I suppose "...................................

 darn it...tha knows wat i mean!!!

Ati have the x850 that is sold only for use with PCi. AGP is on its way out it seems.

Yes main use is for gaming - but also surfing and boring stuff like banking.

As long as you don't toast them overclocking is something for nothing - in my case a way of extending the usable life of my current PC whilst I raise the cash to build the next one.

Very much like Mike at Jabba - we take our PC's to the max and then bring them back a little for reliability - but it has to be done in small steps and with care becuase you can blow your CPU or Mobo to kingdom come - Au de burning silicon anyone ??

Sod that for a lark...

2005 is the Year of Zero Tolerance on Political Correctness, you have been warned ;)

As for why do people OC their PC...

Why not?

Why do people remap their cars instead of buying a faster one to begin with?

It's all about safely getting a bit more out of what you have. I've been running a 1.8 Ghz P4 at between 2.1 & 2.2 Ghz for about 18 months with no probs. AMD chips can be pushed even further apparently :)

Sorry Dave , you asked for that ................. :D

Yup my old Athlon 1gig is now nothing more than a fancy keyring. Overclocking is now alot safer thanks to inbuilt temperature monitors that shut the pc down should the temperature of the cpu become to high. It is still possible to damage ur pc just the same as you can blow the engine of your car if you modify it beyond what was intended. A little known truth however is that it is cheaper for AMD/Intel to underclock a CPU and mass market it as such. E.g it is cheaper for amd to make say 1000 3400 xp's and then underclock them to 3200, 3000, 2800 etc than to make many different chips with varying clockspeeds. It is however difficult to know whether you have an 'underclocked' chip. A prime example is the Athlon 2500 that would clock easily to 3200 speeds :P. Quite a speed boost for just a little risk and no

I tried Overclockin' last month. Went pretty well, I had an Athlon 2500+ (1.83GHz) and its now running at 3200+ (2.20GHz). Performance is a fair bit better cos the memory is running at 400MHz instead of 333MHz as before as well as the clock increase. All for the cost of a couple of fans and a hunk of copper. There are pics and graphs and stuff here: http://www.mightymouse.net/log/nov2004.php#oc

Starting to get geeky in here... I'll shut up now.

Is the Socket 939 Athlon 64 3500+ overclockable and, if so, to what? I have a new PC with an MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum motherboard on order and intend fitting a faster chip, eg the FX-55, when prices drop to sensible levels.

I have a Pentium 4 - 3.00 GHz with 512 MB of RAM. I don't know what the hell that means but can Jabba do anything with that. :D

As in Pizza.

Do they do upgrades?

I thought you had a Millenium Falcon already..albeit in red ;)

Yes, and for free - but only if you collect yourself.

Personally I would get a Winchester 3000 instead of a 3200, as you will save some money, and the 3000 is largely regarded as THE most overclockable AMD component you can buy today - overclocking them to 4000 speeds is not unheard of, and it will easily go up to 3500...

Denis

All CPU's are overclockable - some more than others, the best AMD chips to overclock have the Winchester core which uses a 90nm architecture which run's cooler than the Newcastle 130nm cores and therefore allows more room for overclocking.

As you increase the speed of the chip it will need more power - thus creating more heat and the need for cooling. Its also worth considering your power supply and wether it will be up to the job.

The FX-55 chip is certainly the muts nuts - currently faster than the most potent P4 extreme edition chips - but as you say also mightily expensive
