Number plates

Featured Replies

Having launched earlier today what appears to be a popular thread re the next generation SM, I thought I'd risk a bit of a Meldrew rant about number plates. I am one of those saddos with a personalised plate (but I bet no-one can guess it's relevance: it's D13 BDR) and it really annoys me when garages (a) drill the plates badly so that they craze at first and then get badly weathered, and (B) don't put them on straight!

Are Yetis predrilled, does anyone know, so that the plates will (should) go on straight? How do you persuade dealers to ensure that the plates are properly prepared? And does anyone know of a really good plate manufacturer where I might be better off buying them than leaving it to my dealer?

The Yeti and other Skoda's have plastic grommets for screws in the tailgate at a pre-set distance apart; think it might be an industry standard as the cherished plates that came of the wife's Corsa will go straight on to her Fabia (when I round to transferring them :giggle: ).

This I believe also applies at the front to some extent, except there are four indentations in the bumper for self tapping screws. However the seperate dealers who supplied our Yeti and Fabia II have chosen to ignore the front indentation markers and placed screws at the ends of the plate at the front making new holes :S

Have also come across this at the rear too (on a Ford I owned in the dim and distant past), where instead of using the grommets they have drilled holes in the steel of the tailgate and put self tappers in :o

You an air traffic ontroller by any chance ???

Double sided repair tape FTW - plates break before coming adrift.

but I bet no-one can guess it's relevance: it's D13 BDR

You originaly bought it for a D reg in 1987, you live at number 13 and your initials are BDR? :D

Could be your post code I suppose.

Post code is close - but not a UK connection! Initials also have something to do with it - but mine are AMB!

I've never owned a personalised plate before and despise ones that spell names or words. But I got one for the Yeti! I like the fact that they hide a car's age especially when you buy one as early in the production run as I am. My plate is a play with numbers and my profile name might provide a clue!

No, I never wanted a plate that spells (or worse, almost spells) a name or word. My cherished number has the virtue of having been cheap and with a number of meanings to me - I'm off on a business trip for a couple of days now but if no-one has cracked the code by late Tuesday/early Wednesday I'll reveal it then!

D13 BDR = Did Bedroom?

D13 BDR = Did Bennett Doctor?

Shows you I have bo idea!!

D13 seems to be a point in a landing approach at BDR - MILAS BODRUM in Turkey.

Don't get the connection, though.

I like private plates when they are relevent to the car.

Like, having Y3 TIS on a Yeti would be cool or like S8 BHP.

I also saw on a Lamborghini MI55ILE which was an excellent!

You'll like mine then, it's BO55 FOX. :p

I also had TOP 90 on my modified Defender 90.

Nah yours are cool. They are a pair. And it does not spell something from front to back. THOSE are the ones I don't like. Something like TA54THA for Tabatha or JOH4N, etc.

And as per the colour thread: each to their own I say.

Are you going to Bodrum on December 13th?

Took me ages to find these pictures (I knew I had seen it somewhere last week, but where!) so this shows you the standard four pre-drilled holes on the Yeti's bumpers front and back. The outer ones I presume are for normal Euro plates and the inner ones are for the countries (like Belgium) with smaller plate sizes.

Not a bother.

Pity it is not in as pristine condition as it was before it's PDI.

6000km on it after 4 months which is what was previously our annual mileage.:giggle:

Well you must certainly like your monster then if you drive him that much more than the previous car!

D13 BDR is primarily to recognise the address of our pad in France which is in Department number 13, Bouches Du Rhone! But coincidentally, the D prefix was first issued in August 1986, which is when we moved to our current house, which is the 13th place I've lived in during my life, and BDR are three random letters both from my name and from the name of our house! All in all, a useful plate for one whose memory is declining with the passing years.
