Coil Packs are crap

Featured Replies

My '03 Octy vRS has just started running lumpy again, and it seems to be the same as last time: about 7 weeks ago one of the coil packs packed up, it was repaired under warranty no problems. Now that it has happened again (I assume), does anyone know if this is a normal problem to keep getting. Will this be a regular occurance for me? I think that there were some issues on the older models, maybe there is an alternative model of coil packs I could ask them to fit to save any future problems. I can't let this little niggle get in the way of me enjoying what is otherwise a very reliable motor.

I will be contacting the dealer tomorrow (monday), but I expect they will be closed for servicing. This means I have to make alternative arrangements to get to work whilst I wait for the day they can fit me in, as I'm on early turns this week and can't get time off :nopity: . Pah. :thumbdwn:

Were all of them changed?

So far ive not seen the latest spec ('L' prefix) go wrong.

This was a known problem but I thought it was on earlier cars than yours (I stand by to be corrected though :D). Anyway, standard practice seemed to be that if one went then it would be replaced under warranty and all the others replaced as well as a preventive measure. I would ask them to replace the ones that haven't failed yet as well if this does turn out to be the problem.

thanks , I'm not sure whether they replaced all 4 or just the 1 last time (I'm not very clever and didn't ask). I'll make sure I do ask this time, and will ask if they are the 'L' prefixed ones.

Just gonna sit down and forget about it now, and try to eat my way through tons of xmas left over stuff... :)

They 'should' have changed all of them, Skoda pick up the tab for this regardless of age/mileage.

im sorry ,ive seen this talked about for some time and im now going to finally have to ask the really stupid question what is a coil? sorry{ der}

Each spark plug has its own ignition coil with spark plug connector - otherwise known as a coil pack. The original H version fitted to the 1.8T engine had a high failure rate and was replaced by the J version and then the L. Photos are below. The latest 1.8T engines uses a different designation coil pack.

l had 3 go on my car, heard about a european recall/replacement of these, and asked my dealer why all of mine were not replaced at 1 time, they said that Skoda lreland had told them they were only going to cover the replacment of faulty items, and to replace only the 1's that failed,, a right pain in the a55 for me, each time car was off the road for at least 3days :thumbdwn:

It's worth buying one as a spare so that your car doesn't end up off the road if one fails.

When are they going to take there heads out of the sand and realise whats going on around them. They know there rubbish and still don't have the sense to replace all. When I approached them VW.com had a recall notice

appear on the site and they still din't find an issue with them.
