After Market Xenons

Featured Replies

Hi there all

Does anyone know whats the best aftermarket xenons to go for on a FL Octavia VRS MY2010.

Your thoughts would really help, and an idea of what I may to pay for such kits.

Also are they easy to fit, I am not the best technically minded when it comes to cars.

Cheers.

i got a kit from ebay  no problems :D

Not being cheeky or anything but maye you might put a link up to the ones you got to make it easier for the OP ?? There are many kits on ebay emoticon-0148-yes.gifemoticon-0136-giggle.gif

Got mine from hid direct and love them,( i went for the more expensive 50 watt and 6000k bulbs which give a nice crisp bluey light) just remember to get the kit that has got the built in builb warning for the can bus system, piec of cake to fit just follow the instructions carefully and you should be ok.

Was there not a thread a while back that looked at the pro's and cons of buying a kit with the bulb warning override or coding the bulb warning out in VAG-Com, (or whatever its called now, lol). Consensus of opinion was that coding it out was the better option.

Are these HID kits actually xenons (ballasts, ignitors, gas discharge bulbs etc.) or just blue coloured bulbs?

I'm assuming you need the projector type headlight design for them to work. These can't therefore be retrofitted to cars with traditional halogens with a reflective backing?

What happens at MOT time, don't you need auto levelling and headlight wash in the UK?

am suprised there has been no dogooder preacher posting yet.... :giggle:

Not a testable item at the momment as long as the beam patern is correct then its a pass, Nothing in mot testing that tells you to check for self leveling suspension or headlamp washers.

The ones in the link i've posted is the whole kit

Had NO problems at all with them ;)

Can fit to ANY car but projector's keep the beam where it should be, normal headlights scatter the beam........

The same Skoda optics are used for both halogen and HID sources - so the beam pattern will be 'OE'.

Get a 35W non-CANbus HID set that will install inside the light unit rear housing cover. 4300K is the OE colour temperature. Code with VCDS.

I have retrofit kit on mine

It´s a 35w 6000k ( I will get 5000k soon) CAN-BUS system.

The only thing I did was lower both headlights 1/4 off a turn ;)

Thanks for the replies guys.

I gather the canbus ones are the way to go.

So looks like I will be needing some H7 sets? is that right.

Do they need any drilling etc to fit or can they just be simple plug and play after the VagCon coding?

Also have seen on here some people say that these kits are illegal without the headlight washers...?

Are these kits road legal and can I fit to my FL VRS so I hopefully see a bit better in the dark nights that are rapidly approaching?

Cheers

Dont take what you read on here or any other motoring forum as gospel regarding legalities.

Google HIDS/Xenon conversions and get info from VOSA and Dept of Transport.

Any bulb used on a car must have an 'E' marking. These have not and will NEVER have,so fitting them will have implications regarding Construction and Use regs. Have an accident, they get spotted, your shaffted as your driving a car that shouldnt be on the road and possibly with no insurance!

Heres a couple of links:

http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/roadsafety/drs/hidheadlamps

http://www.ukpoliceonline.co.uk/index.php?/topic/32360-illegal-retrofitted-hid-conversion-kits/

And from this page, who are one of the biggest sellers of HID Kits in the UK http://www.hids4u.co.uk/terms.html is the quote:

Technical for HID Conversion Kits

Please remember that it is your responsibility to ensure that the items purchased are suitable for your vehicle make/model and that the use of said items complies with all applicable laws in your Country. In the UK, fitting an aftermarket HID kit is not technically road legal as you are replacing a halogen bulb with an HID bulb, because of this the HID bulb cannot be E marked, which is a requirement for it to be road legal. Therefore our HID kits are sold for off-road use only.

All technical information provided by HIDS4U LTD is given in good faith only and can not be taken as fact. HIDS4U LTD will not be held responsible for any damage caused to your vehicle from the use of any product purchased. If in doubt consult a qualified auto electrician or your vehicles’ authorised main dealer. This does not affect your statutory rights as a consumer.

So, if one of the biggest online sellers are saying they are illegal...... ;-)

I have had them before, in a Nissan Xtrail and the swapped them to a Navara. Light intensity was fantastic, light scatter was terrible, was illuminating Boing 747's as well as the road ahead!

Have considered buying a new h7 kit for the vRS as it has projector headlamps. Still illegal but should have the same beam pattern as halogen? Wrong, read:

Thanks for that Steve

I checked with my insurance company and they were very clear - they are illegal and my adding them would void my insurance, not something I would choose to do voluntarily and my occupation involves me having access to a car.

So looks like I will be sticking with my halogens.

Thanks for all the advice guys.

Go on, go the whole hog ;)

Decat your exhaust, fit limo tints, lexus style rear lights (without reflectors) and an aftermarket xenon kit.

Read most forums and you'd be convinced your car is perfectly fine!

Most insurance companies would tend to disagree...

Steve

The Performance Halogen bulbs do make a difference though, and are 100% legal as they are 'e' marked (as long as they are 55w that is).

They do seem to have a shorter life than normal H7's though, so can be expensive over time.

if you do change to the upgraded halogens then when you take the headlight units out, make sure you lubricate the mechanisms as they do have a habit of sticking as the car gets older.

Steve

Hi all, might be a daft question. I have just ordered my new skoda with the standard lights is there any way I can upgrade these to halogen lights.

They are halogen as standard.

See stupid question stupid type error. I am aware the car comes with Halogen as standard, is there a way to upgrade them to Xenon headlights. Is it a complete new light unit.

Cheers
