VRS home, advice needed please

Featured Replies

hi all got my vrs home yesterday, just would like to ask a few questions in the best way to drive the fabia, both quickly and slowly, is it ok to drive the car in 5th or 6th or any gear really and have the car crusing at 1500 rpm? whens it best to change gear for economy purposes?

and now onto the fast stuff :) i find i most enjoy driving the car fast by drving to 3000rpm then changing, then the rpm drops to 2500rpm then i drive to 3000 again and change and so on. is this the best way to get the most out of the car? ive heard booting it from too low revs does the clutch harm but surely booting from 2000 or 2500 cant be bad for it.

all opinions and advice greatly appreciated :)

Your rev band is ideal to look after the DMF and clutch. However, beware using 6th gear for cruising at anything under 60 MPH, it wastes fuel big time. If you take the first digit of your speed e.g. 3 when doing 30 MPH thats also the gear you want. It's also very flexible in third gear for over taking. No need to short shift, it will go from 30 to 70 in 3rd PDQ.

thankyou :)

Out of interest, why's that?

It labours the engine big time. If you try to maintain speed, even on a slight incline below 60 MPH in 6th gear, the engine struggles and wastes fuel.

yeah agreed!

i've even noticed with the other half learning to drive in it, with her revving the nuts off it (slowly however)

mpg is up!! she's 1 - 2 gears lower than i would be LOL

I dont use 6th until i'm at 70 or over :)

With you now  . Never really thought about it before - I don't give it any beans until 2000 if possible and always drop a gear at the slightest sign of labouring.

I drive it this way, when cruising at 30, I sit in 4th. When on the motorway, I usually sit in 6th doing 60mph. I even keep it in 6th when on a slight incline on the motorway. Never had a problem and always get good mileage.

Me either mate

5th goes up to a displayed 110mph in mine with no probs.

(on my mates closed airfield ;) )

On the flat you'll get away with a bigger gear. I can use 4th in a 30 limit, 5th in a 40 limit or 6th from around 55 realistically. Have to point out I have cruise control and only do this for fuel consumption whilst on the flat. Cruise control helps here as there's no impatient big toe trying to prod the accelerator pedal.

For pressing on, going quickly, best results, IMO are to hold onto gears up to 4K rpm. Pre-remap, that was a bit gritted teeth as it all feels a bit futile but untimately, making most use of each gear and reducing the number of gear changes will help performance.
