Fitting new number plates

Featured Replies

Thanks to another members post I've treated my Scout to a new reg number :)

The new plates have arrived but they don't have any holes !

It looks like I have the option of drilling some holes in the new plates or sticking with the supplies sticky tape.

The current plates are screwed. What do you think ?

Bit nervous about drilling incase I knacker them lol !

Just toying with the same problem myself. I got plates from DemonPlates and they have a protective film on so I'm not too worried about scratching them but I am going to carefully measure the existing hole centres, punch and pilot drill the screw holes. The fixing instructions say the double sided tape shoould be fine but I always go for belt and braces!

I wonder which plate you went for - there were some tasty ones available...

Thanks Mike. I have a variable electric dril but may go for the good old manual drill for this. Good tip for drilling through the old plates !! I would have been measuring and taping !!

Have you just purchased a number as well Les after seeing the post ? Did you go for a SCXX OUT plate ?

I recently had to change my rear plate on the Octy but i decided to tape it on with some Harris number plate tape from Halfords. It`s been on 3 months now and still stuck solid. I kind of prefer the look of the plates without the screw covers showing. It`s all down to personnal opinion i suppose though.

ive had these a year from demon plates , please dont ruin nice plates by drilling them use the stickers they are very good.

Blimey, you have eagle eyes! I have a set from demon and the postcode and BS numbers are on the right of the plate about 2mm high. Agree about the country identifier but I can't believe this would be a priority for the police.

Yes I've read that the police are having purges on cars with non-standard lettering, because of the reliance on automatic numberplate recognition cameras.

I've known of repeat offenders around here, who to be fair have gone and returned to illegal plates after they've been stopped, to have the right to that numberplate taken off them. And no, you don't get a refund on your DVLA purchase!

So overall it's just not worth it. Plus I don't think the 'custom' plates look that good anyway.

Oh, and please don't drill them! It's a hassle you don't need and the double-sided pads often supplied with them, or available from Halfords/motor factors is more than upto the job. Another option is to use a plate holder (there's a Brisky one available in the Shop for example) - then you screw that in, and then clip your numberplates into the holder. Saves a lot of mucking about, and they look good too

Cheers,

Steve

number plate surrounds! thats the way forward,

My brother works at an MOT garage and has had instructions to start failing vehicles because of illegal number plates.

I'm sure his test centre won't be the only one..

The only problem with them though is it makes stealing them even easier (this is an increasing crime).

Personally I prefer them stuck on where possible.

mmmm My new plates have a black border and the BS mark but no details of the supplier. Do I need to scrap them and get another set locally ?

Technically yes. Although in my view the most important part is that they meet the BS standard, so that reflectivity is correct. It doesn't really matter who made them. And it will take an eagle-eyed officer on a quiet day to pull you up about that, if everything else is standard and correct. For example my plates have the manufacturer details built into the black border. Good luck seeing those at anything further away than about 30cm ;)

Cheers,

Steve

Can you still get that spray to make the plates invisible to cameras and ANPR? :wonder:

That spray that never worked?

Why would you want to make your plate invisible to ANPR?

If it gets stolen, wouldn't you want it to show up?

The spray was supposedly to avoid Gatso cameras, in that the flash bounced back off the spray layer and came up as a white, illegible area on the photo that was produced.

An ANPR camera is obviously completely different, in that it's very much like a standard digital videocamera in terms of optics, so a spray definitely wouldn't work here, as no flash is used.

No Tax? No Insurance? No Registered Owner details? Vehicle involved in crime.. a multitude of reasons why "scoundrels" would want to hide their number plate from ANPR - but non I can think as to why fine upstanding Briskodian's would..

I f you have an altered numberplate it does a number of things, it shows you have a low IQ , it gives the police a reason to stop you and give you a £30 fixed penalty ticket and your car will also fail an MOT. There are ever increasing numbers of cars round here with odd number plates...those who have had to put their altered ones back to what they should be. Keep smiling Monkster.

I can't help but think they is a lot of of pedantic people on this forum , in respect to my plates they are legally spaced, correctly sized and even have bs no.s on them. They also have the gb symbol and euro stars displayed, the only extra they have is a small skoda badge and vrs logo and the border is green. They are completely readable by no. Plate cameras and they passed an mot. Sure by the letter of law , yes illegal but only a pedant would pick up on it.

I guess the point is that the filth are not generally known for their latitude or listening to reason.

FWIW the logo's look cluttered, aside from that I like em.

pedantic , imho. I'm not trying to cause offence just my opinion. Ok I get pulled get a producer have to change my plates ! These forums always go off on a tangent, I only meant to show my (in my imho) nice plates and how much better using sticky pads over screws looks better!

Indeed it is, but if you have a cherished plate then the DVLA are informed and they can withdraw your right to display the registration plate. Dont forget, when you buy a registration, you are only buying the rights to use it and that right can be withdrawn at any time. You never actually own the cherished plate, and you must pay an annual fee to the DVLA to keep it, once its no longer on a vehicle otherwise it goes back into the pool.

I've got 2 cherished plates and both have similar badges and borders and in 10th yrs of having them , they have passed police road checks and mot's no problem. As said previously only a pedant would do something about them.

The law is pedantic. That's the point of it, to divide things up so we know right from wrong as fact and not just opinion.

If you only want to argue about degree's of breaking the law or perhaps whether the law should be different then that's fine.

The police are there to uphold the law and we need them to do that. Can't see much mileage in criticizing them for doing precisely what they are paid to do.

If the MOT stations and police are getting instructed to clamp down then that's fine too.

We can choose to take advice or ignore it but facts are facts and that's fine.
