wiring of the fuel system

Featured Replies

Hi Guys

have been having problems with the engine cutting out, this was down no fuel in the engine, i originally had an error for the fuel pump relay, i have now replaced that on the off chance but it's has got much worse now and car doesn't get any fuel at all.

aa came out and were really helpful this time, we narrowed it down to the pump not getting power, he proved this by running a wire from the live at the relay to the live at the pump and hay presto it worked.

the main problem is we can't work out where the power is being stopped, the wiring diagram on his laptop says that the fuel pump relay gets a feed from the glow plug relay and both are connectewd to the ecu on seperate pins, but if the glow plug relay was faulty then i would be having trouble starting the car in the morning, but it's a first turn instant fire type of car so can't imagine that there is a fault in the glow plug relay, so we think it's probably a wire somewhere thats either loose or a dry solder somewhere.

I am planing to find a switched live in the fuse pannel and then run a cable all the way to the fuel pump with an inline 15A fuse.

can anyone think of a problem with this or has anyone seen a similar problem that they have managed to find the break?

i don't know wheather to just try the glow plug relay just on the off chance, but it would have to be a new one as i can't find any old relay's

any thoughts

cheers

the compression on the direct injection engines is sufficient to start in all but the coldest of weather (they just rattle more without the additional heat of the glow plugs) you could prove that by removing the glowplug relay and give the pump a live feed and see that it will still start,

the glowplug relay would be my first choice of things to test

i'll get hold of another relay and see if it does anything, only anoying thing is that it has fixed it's self before and then been fine and then done it again,

so my worry is if i change the relay and it starts ok will that be it fixed or will it do it again!

i guess i could try and test the glowplugs, how easy is it to get to the glowplugs? mind you i could always just take the plug off and stick a meter on it.
