fabia Steering angle sensor replacement cost?

Recommended Posts

I`ve narrowed down the fault on my fabia 1.4 16v (2001) to the steering angle sensor (thanks to the search function), my dealer wants £120 and another £130 to fit it (DM Keith Huddersfield)....which to me seems alot. I can`t do it myself as I cannot get the car up high enough, what sort of labour cost should I be looking at?.

Cheers

Cost is about £60 for a new one, then whatever labour. Is roughly half hour work at most from memory.

Thanks for the reply devonutopia, apart from my dealer where can I source the part? Checked the local suppliers and even visited ebay, I will call round my local independents who work on skoda or vw's to get a more realistic labour cost.

Hi,

I'd be interested to find out if anyone can get a cheap steering angle sensor for my old Fabia (it's a W reg!!). I bought a set of ramps to get the car up a bit and intend to change it. Oddly enough now, the steering light on the dash has gone off, and I get some occasional assist. I plugged it into VAG.com with some dodgy cable I got from Hong Kong and it says there is a sensor fault. Looks like changing it isn't too big a task, found some left hand drive one brand new for £49 on ebay but the loom is too short, not sure if I can just disconnect the old one and use it, or if it is all part of the sensor (I think it is looking at photos).

Bottom line is, does anyone know of a cheap sensor I can lay my hands on??

I tried to get one cheaper than the £115 from skoda but nothing, I too saw the eBay one. . Thought I had found a bargain until I noticed it was for a left hand version.

I was tempted to pop into my local scrappers but the other half said no.

I would be absolutely certain that it is the sensor as you could be wasting your money.

A cheap (free) tip to try first (may or may not work but being free whats the harm!)

Disconnect and remove the battery negative terminal (make sure you know your radio code etc)

Unbolt the other end of the negative terminal where it meets the bulkhead (it should only be a few inches long)

Clean/sandpaper or whatever the metal terminal ends and the battery negative post itself.

Clean the positive battery terminal and post as well whilst you are at it.

Refit, and see if the power steering light goes out.

(some people buy a new earth lead to the battery for about £10) but being tight I did the above and now the electric steering pump gets the full current it requires!.

Hi

I had my angle sensor replaced by a VW audi specialist the mechanic who worked on my car was a ex Skoda mechanic, he told me that you must use the genuine skoda one as its an uprated part from the ones originaly fitted. The old ones were plastic and the new metal so dont skimp or cut corners as you will waste money, the reason they are hard to find on ebay etc is they are a main dealer part only. Sorry for the bad news I spent hours trying to find a cheap one, the one from Hong Kong on ebay is no good and wont fit and the mechanic said dont tamper with the wiring loom as you will get shorts in the electrics due to the power that goes through the loom. I can assure once done the car feels and steers so much better and no flickering lights and light to heavy steering. Hope that helps

Link is kaput :(

Disco the battery earth, get the car high enough in the air to get underneath, remove the two allen screws holding the sensor into the steering column, remove sensor, carefully release the wiring from each clip in turn until you reach the plug on the pump, remove plug and fit the new sensor by retracing those same steps back to the steering column. Lower car, reconnect battery and BOOM!

I fitted a steering angle sensor to a touran the other day easy enough job remove air bag steering wheel etc then it's there right in front of you the part was about £50 from tps really easy to replace then once fitted needs calibrating with suitable diagnostic equipment hope this helps :)

Unfortunately it doesn't because the angle sensor in question on the Fabia is at the bottom of the steering column near the rack and can only be easily accessed from underneath the car.

does the older type need this calibrating done?

Tweezers? It's only plastic with some electrical stuff in it, possibly a lolly stick with a dab of superglue on the end held against it until the glue bonds to it, needlenose pliers. Get creative.
