Octavia (2000) 1.9tdi Engine cuts out

Featured Replies

Hi,

Hope somebody can point me in the right direction.

This morning my engine cut out on the motorway. I got to the hard shoulder, sat for a few minutes and it started again without a problem.

This has happened once before.

Also, I think related - sometimes I have difficulty starting the car when the engine is hot e.g. when stopping for fuel and re-starting.

Once re-started everything seems fine.

thanks

Paul

The restart when hot issue could be a stucky anti-shudder valve in the EGR assembly. Mine did this a few times a few times after a 60 mile drive, and then stop for fuel - it would take 5+ seconds of cranking (seems like an age!) before it would catch and start.

My Octy cut out once, and ended up with a very rough idle, and exhaust smelling very dieselly (and whitish in colour), it had zero power. I assumed an injector (or several) had got stuck open. I left it for an hour in a field gateway (was only yards from my parents at the time), and walked back to it after lunch and it started fine and has not misbehaved since (30k+ miles ago), and the old girl is on 173k (2001, 110TDI).

As for the motorway cut-out, the best bet would be to get the car scanned for faults and then maybe take it from there. Where in the UK (?) are you, you might find a local member willing to help you out.

Thanks for the reply.

I have a code 01314 - I'm not sure what this tells me.

Could you tell me where I can find the EGR assembly and what to look for.

BTW my car is is currently at 209k - I wonder what the record is?

cheers

Paul

See here for an explanation of that code

This is the EGR assembly

The butterfly valve is controlled by vaccum assembly on the left of the EGR pipework. Normally when you turn the engine off, a vaccum is applied and the valve closes, and then a few seconds later the vacuum is released and it reopens. if your EGR pipework is really bunged up, then it might be sticking shut - this is what happened to mine I think when I used to stop for fuel on the way home sometimes. Cleaned it up and the problem went away.

Great - thanks both of you.

Looks like my next job after fixing the washing machine.

Good idea to leave until after the washing machine as you will get quite mucky if you have to clean out the EGR valve.

If I had to guess, I would say it's the ECU power relay (109).

It's not uncommon to see code 01314 when the relay is failing.

I did see something along those lines earlier while trawling through previous posts.

Are these the ones located under the dash?

If so where do i get one - is there a part no.

thanks

Part number is 1J0 906 381 A. Available from VW or Skoda

Plugs into the relay panel above the pedals

Thanks. Washing machine now done - on with the car. I'll let you know.

Well hopefully it's sorted now.

I had another cutting out episode on Sunday so thought that the relay may be the easiest place to start.

I found this link http://www.cardiagnostic.co.uk/relay_109.htm

showing the innards of the relay and a dry solder joint.

I took the plunge, removed the relay undid the cover & resoldered what to me looked like a couple of dodgy joints.

So far no problems - no fault codes.

Fingers crossed

Thanks for all your help
